The Spine of Leviathan
Image
The heavy rain ran streams of water down the mountainsides. By no means was it an easy hike up to the top of the Spine of Leviathan. Were it not for the pre-established paths that had some cleared space, the muddied dirt would have added far more difficulty to the trek. The sharp incline under the battering droplets and the ferocious thunder-and-lightning combo were enough to dishearten someone without resolve. "He REALLY could have picked a better time ..." Hiroshi grumbled, two hands firmly holding down on the handle of his umbrella. With each passing step, the umbrella was becoming harder and harder for him to maintain a grip on. The strong winds threatened to rip it from his grasp. Fortunately, Hiroshi avoided that. It took smart angling of the umbrella to stop the wind from picking up underneath it, turning it in its entirety inside-out.

Through some of these shifts, a fair amount of rain had pelted his coat and his messy-brown hair. "I have to get there, though, I have to." He reaffirmed himself of his decision to persevere, pushing up further and further along the path that let to the top of the mountain.

Miyami was thankful that it was raining. It won't seem weird to her teammates that she's carrying around an umbrella, because she needs it. She was quite nervous about this meeting, but the rain (despite being turbulent) brings her comfort. Holding her umbrella over her head, she pressed on up the mountain to the designated meeting place, outlined in the letter she received from her sensei. She's thankful to Kazuya, the man she calls her uncle, for reinforcing joints to give them more strength. If he had not done so, keeping the umbrella from destroying itself in the track up the mountain would have proved difficult. The higher she climbed, the stronger the winds became and the louder the thunder roared. She held her umbrella close, and the knuckles on both of her hands were turning white from the strong grip on the neck of it's handle. In a way her umbrella represents her protection, her strength, and her courage. It can't be broken, and even if it breaks, she now has the right people to fix it again. Perhaps her teammates will also someday be a part of her small web of people she relies on, or people close enough that she will allow them to be shielded by the canopy of her umbrella. Only time will tell.
Speaking of time, she was beginning to think she might be late (as she had to be extra careful with her footing), until she saw another figure up on the peek braving the trail. Picking up her pace, she attempts to catch up.

Though she often enjoyed the rain, Momoka wasn’t too thrilled today as she trudged up the mountain path. It was familiar however, a trail Momoka might’ve hiked under more lenient skies. She was looking forward to meeting her new Squad but at this rate the downpour might wash everyone away. Squinting ahead in the piercing slurry of wind and water Momoka kept a steady pace despite her soaked clothing. If only I brought a better coat.. Or maybe an umbrella… Momoka thought to herself.

Eventually Momoka caught sight of a couple figures further along the path. That must be them, who else would be here in this storm, she concluded. Now entering a slight jog, Momoka began closing the distance on the figures that were now nearing each other as well. She thought of shouting a greeting but doubted the noise would carry in the wind until she got closer.

A hooded figure made their way through the rain and scattered rocks of the mountainous region, a white and red boar mask covering her face from unwanted eyes. As they climbed the treacherous terrain small marking were carved into the dotting rocks covering the mountainside, leaving a difficult trail towards a small cave that they knew of, making it an ideal location to wait at. This means of trailing was known by all ANBU of Iwagakure, a sign that Nejireta was sure to pick out with those shrewd eyes of his.

Here she would wait to hand off a single note before using the Body Flicker to leave and return to her various duties. Within the note was a hastily scribbled order from the Tsuchikage to meet up with him at the Obelisk, though he was to stay out of sight until the foreigners had left his office. It was merely a precaution, but Shinren wouldn't allow himself to become complacent in these times of peace.

Shoulda guessed it'd be raining... Neji sighed and dropped his head. It was just his luck that he'd be running late, without enough time to even stop at home and grab an umbrella. Of course, he couldn't have known it was going to rain before going cross-country, and he wouldn't have brought one if he had the time, so this was mostly to justify being so unprepared. He was cold, but at least it wasn't his fault.

"Ah well," he started once more before pulling out that same curved flask and unscrewing the lid that hanged from its neck. "'Least it feels nice." The drunk, while bobbing and weaving slightly with his gait up the muddied trail, readied the last of his Rock Ridge Barreling whiskey. The thunder clapped and Neji, startled, glanced up with an approving nod. "Sick," he chuckled, rolling his eyes as he pulled the flask to his lips. They stopped as sharply as his legs did, however. He stared in stillness for a few seconds as the flask emptied down his throat with nary a taste.

A heavy sigh turned to a breathy burp as the whiskey settled in his stomach, but he marched toward the rocks all the same. The subtle carvings were a veritable map nigh indecipherable, if not imperceptible, to those that don't already know how to read them. Though there were no prying eyes to spot it, the sage kicked from the muddy path and zagged with a single precise kick per stone along this new trail. Those markings were left very recently, someone was here and waiting for him. He arrived in the small and uninteresting cave and was met with only a silent figure with a slip of paper.

The ANBU disappeared as Neji immediately glanced down to read this message. "Just a meet 'n greet, huh?" He asked as another Neji slipped of himself.

"Yup, seems that way. Who's gettin the kiddos?"

"Play you for it?" The two locked narrowed eyes and smirked.

"3...2...1... GO!" Rock.
"3...2...1... GO!" Scissors.

"Bah, fine," the loser sighed before rushing off towards Iwagakure.

[Exit]

Meanwhile, the other simply returned to the trail and continued the climb.

With each step, the final destination came closer. Trudging up the mountain path was a challenging battle. It took a lot of focus, a lot of dedication, to keep Hiroshi's feet firmly pushing towards that next step. With the booming crashes of lightning overhead and the constant downpour of water hitting the ground, the young boy found himself tuned out to the rest of the environment around him. That's why when the sound of movement barely audible over the other, more natural sounds caught his attention, he was caught with surprise. He turned quickly to look at who it was, his eyes settling onto a girl around his own age. Hiroshi began to let out a breath, but found it quickly transform into a gasp and then a cry. "Ahh!" He shouted as the umbrella was pulled from him, the turn to see the newcomer allowing the wind an opportune angle to set sail with the item. His arm whipped to the side like a rag doll, and his fingers uncurled. The umbrella took off, carried off into the wind until it inevitably went over the side of the mountain.

"... Well, there goes that." He muttered with an exasperated tone. The Kesshoukei waited until the black-haired girl was close by before greeting her loudly in order to be heard over the rainstorm. "Are you here for Suponji-san's team meetup too?" He could only imagine that she was-- what other reason would she go through climbing this mountain in the middle of all of this? "I'm Hiroshi! Nice to meet you!" It was then that he also noticed the second girl coming up from the rear, this one seemingly a bit older. Too far away to greet, Hiroshi offered a wave to the woman, waiting for her to catch up before continuing the journey up to the top with the other two.

There wasn't much further to go before they reached the peak. What was their teacher going to be like?

Miyami watched at the boy's umbrella took lift-off and flew away. She couldn't help but chuckle, but only briefly. He was quickly exposed, and getting wet from the rain. She hurried to him, as best as she could in the terrain, to extended her umbrella. In response to his first question, she nodded, but it's unclear if he was even able to see amongst the chaos. Miyami didn't want to yell. She only spoke to him once the both of them were safely under the canopy. She didn't feel the need to raise her voice over the storm due to their close proximity. "Miyami Nara. It's nice to-" Interrupted by a roll of thunder, she paused to send a death glare to the sky through her umbrella. She composed herself, and offered a smile to Hiroshi as she continued, "Nice to meet you too." After the introductions, she looked over her shoulder to find whatever Hiroshi waved at. As she spotted the girl, she offered her own, less-energetic wave. Once she got closer, she motioned for her to duck under the safety of her umbrella as well.

As Momoka neared the pair, they huddled under one of their umbrellas before reaching out a hand and beckoning Momoka to join them underneath. Thank god they had the foresight to bring an umbrella.. Momoka thought to herself as she approached. Relieved to escape the torrent above, Momoka ducked under and was met face to face with two Iwa shinobi. Younger than herself, but not by much, the ninja seemed to be Genin as well. "I don't suppose.. We're here to meet each other? Suponji's new team?" Momoka sputtered out through shivers. "I'm Momoka Akiyama, but I'd prefer if you call me 'Mo' for short."

It seemed that Neji wasn't as late as he thought he was; or, at least, that the kiddos were too. It was hard to tell without a clear sky. What he could tell was that the genin were far up ahead of him on the trail. It was doubtful that they could see him; even if they had eyes like Neji's, they'd have to consciously decide to look down the trail; but he delighted in the opportunity to watch them as they ascended. For now, Neji's eyes were glued to the boy, presumably Hiroshi.

"Oh, thank you." Hiroshi thanked with a tinge of embarrassment in his tone. Miyami offering her umbrella to him was a kind gesture. Well appreciated, Hiroshi maneuvered himself to fit nicely under her umbrella as best he could, all the while ensuring not to encroach too closely into Miyami's personal space. The cost was leaving a bit more of his lower portion exposed to the pouring rain, but at least his upper half would find relief. The older woman soon joined them underneath as well, requesting that they call her "Mo". "I'm Kesshoukei Hiroshi. It's nice to meet you, Mo-san." A friendly smile accompanied his greeting. He turned his head to Miyami afterward, as if to pass the turn on to her to introduce herself to their final teammate.

"That's right, I think we've all found each other. Now we just have to find our teacher." Hiroshi's eyes trailed up towards the very peak of the Spine of Leviathan. A flash of lightning ripped through the sky overhead. "Let's hope he's found us some nice shelter up there, hmm?" It was wishful thinking, but it was worth hoping for all the same. "Come on, it's not much further!" The trio's progress would likely come a bit slower now, considering that they had to balance their pacing and even just their steps to ensure that everyone remained protected underneath Miyami's umbrella. Hiroshi was sure that their teacher couldn't fault them for making him wait a little bit longer if it was for a purpose such as their moment of camaraderie.

"Miyami Nara. Nice to meet you, Mo." She repeats her name after being prompted by Hiroshi. She listens as he talks, nodding. They all have to shuffle on together in order to remain protected. With the genin all close together and with Miyami in the middle to hold her umbrella up, she's quite protected from the rain. Although, another problem arises. Their feet keep knocking into each other. Miyami hardly has room to even take a step, and she keeps getting mud kicked onto her legs. "Alright," She stops abruptly. "We're not going to get anywhere like this." As difficult as it is to walk, and as much as she values being on time, she doesn't have the heart to abandon the others to brave the storm alone. "Unless... we work together." She adds, ideas forming in her head. "If we all take steps at the same time, we'll move faster and we won't be kicking anyone. Sound like a plan?" She waits for confirmation, but once everyone agrees, she fully intends on counting them in. "We'll start on the right foot. On three..."

Flashing a smile after introductions, Mo and the others return to the trail ahead of them. Momoka began giggling as all six of their feet continuously bumped and slowed their overall progress while the three Genin attempted to remain as dry as possible under Miyami's umbrella. Miyami then spoke up with a better idea, and the newly formed squad began walking in tandem. It was probably a funny sight for onlookers (if there were any), but it was definitely more efficient and a much dryer way to hike on such a day.

Nearing the summit, Momoka spoke up, "Look! nearly to peak.." Still huddling under the umbrella, Mo offers a coy "thank you" towards Miyami for her forethought and generosity with the umbrella.

I see... Few things escaped Neji's eyes, and Hiroshi's prowess was no exception. So he must be focusing on his ninjutsu... He thought, noting the apparent skill within the boy's fingers and the way he carried himself. It was subtle, as climbing this mountain wasn't exactly that strenuous for a shinobi, but the drunk could tell that this boy could climb well beyond that of an ordinary genin.

Continuing to rise far behind the kids, Neji locked his eyes on the one most prepared, Miyami.

The sudden stop caught Hiroshi by surprise, who quickly tried to stop himself before stepping too far into the rain. He came to a halt just in the nick of time, narrowly remaining underneath the edge of the umbrella. He turned back, listening carefully to Miyami's suggestion. She definitely had a point-- it was much more difficult to walk under the same umbrella when they weren't all in sync. "Right foot first, got it." Hiroshi confirmed, lining himself up again with Miyami and Mo. "Lead the way, Miyami." The count began. One, two, three, go! Together with his new allies, Hiroshi took the first step.

The initial timing could have been more precise, but within a couple of steps Hiroshi had figured out the pacing to Miyami's stride. Matching it with his own, he fell in line with her steps, minimizing the issues caused on his end. In tandem with his allies, the trio moved up the muddy path notably quicker than they had been before. Mo was the first of them to call it out when the Spine of Leviathan started to curve, the steep incline steadily mellowing out into a flatter top. "Whoooh, we finally made it ..." Hiroshi let out a sigh of great relief. "I don't know how much more of that climb my legs could take." They burned from the long travel: Hiroshi had neglected to take as many breaks as he should have on the path up to here out of excitement for what was to come and worry for being the latest.

Once the group is stopped and relaxing at the peek of the plateau, Miyami looks around to see if she could spot their instructor. It's difficult to see with all the rain, but she gives it a shot nonetheless. "I don't see him..." She says under her breath as her eyes scan the mountainside. "I guess... all we have to do is wait. Looks like we aren't late after all. Good job, team." She gives a reaffirming nod to Hiroshi, then to Mo. She takes this time to catch her breath, but she doesn't let her guard down. This whole thing could be a set up to a trap, or some sort of test from their mysterious teacher. His absence could be planned, for all she knows. She considers that they would just be early, but she doubts it. Not with the bad weather, and the challenges they faced on their ascend.

Thankful for the peak of the mountain, Mo shared in a congratulatory moment with her team. At least everything from here is downhill.. She thought to herself. Mo was surprised their new Sensei wasn't waiting for them. She had hoped not to tough the weather for long but it seemed unlikely. With no sign of their teacher, Mo's mind began to wander. She questioned if they all misread the meeting location... but that would be unlikely for all three of them to do. Maybe Suponji Sensei changed the location after seeing the weather but we didn't get notified yet? Mo was squinting into the distance with no avail, "I hope he gets here soon.." she mumbled. It was maybe a couple minutes later when the three genin were able to make out a figure approaching from the edge of their view in the storm. "Is that him you think?"

Neji always loved this place, it provided him with such incredible sights on both sides of the narrow ridge. And the top? Wide enough for comfortable sparring and jutsu training in the high altitude. It was a gorgeous location, aesthetically and functionally. The rain was unexpected, though, but maybe he could use that? Who's to say.

Maybe the three at the crest of the spine? As he approached, Neji continued to size up what were certainly his new students. He didn't say much as he walked up; nothing, actually, unless you count a murmured "Hh" as a hello.

Slouched and stumbling slightly with his soaked shirt and hair clinging to his body, Neji walked passed them with a drained and malaised look as he took a seat on a nearby rock. He twisted his back and stretched for a good long bit- too long, in fact- before leaning to one side with both palms outstretched. Notably, due to the whole sitting down thing, the ground wasn't quite within reach. Their new sensei tumbled to the mud and, while he caught himself with both palms, his pants and much of his shirt were now a muddied mess.

"Eeyup, s'bout right," Neji started with a grunt as a square portion of earth was raised to an angle, pivoting from near his hands' landings to a sort of small earthen leanto that would fit him and him alone underneath. At least he was out of the rain.

Raising his eyes to observe Hiroshi, Miyami and Momoka, a crack of lightning with an immediate clap of thunder startled Neji once more. Reeling his head back awkwardly, he blinked passive aggressively, as if the universe itself was fucking with him on purpose. "Uhh, a'right, introductions, yeah? Names 'n shit." As he spoke, he raised one muddy hand and flailed it ambiguously towards the lot of them. He didn't really care which went first, just that someone did. "Oh, uh... please!" His eyes, no matter who was speaking, locked onto Momoka.

Neji smirked. This was his favorite part.

Hiroshi let out a small laugh when Miyami complimented their timing. "I guess we aren't." The boy replied, somewhat humored by the situation. Truthfully, he was pretty sure that they were still a little bit late. But, perhaps their teacher was even more late than they were. It was a surprise, certainly; Hiroshi would have expected the veteran shinobi to be an expert at arriving on time. Patiently, the trio of Genin waited atop the Spine of Leviathan, cowering underneath Miyami's umbrella in order to maintain their protection from the rain. Eventually, Mo's eyes spotted something, her voice calling out the arrival of another. Tracing her gaze to where she was looking, Hiroshi spotted him as well.

... Is that him? Hiroshi questioned as the man passed by them with barely any acknowledgement. His poor posture and lack of grace in his movements seemed contradictory to what Hiroshi had expected. When their soon-to-be-revealed teacher plummeted down into the mud, Hiroshi did his best to hide the stunned look of uncertainty on his face. The man finally called out to them, requesting their names in such a way that answered the doubt in Hiroshi's mind. He sounded like he knew their purpose here. That has to be him. It had to be.

Taking the initiative, the fourteen year-old boy put a hand up to draw attention over to himself. "Uhm... Kesshoukei Hiroshi!" He called out, raising his voice to be heard over the weather that surrounded them. He lowered his head respectfully for a moment as he introduced himself.

Crossing an arm underneath the one holding her umbrella, she raised an eye brow at the man before them claiming to be their sensei. She wasn't really sure what she was expecting in the man that was to be their teacher, but this certainly wasn't it. It sort of makes her feel right at home. Their sensei is acting not unlike her Uncle Kazuya who will sometimes turn up late at night drunk off his ass and reeking of cigarette smoke. They are acting similar, she realizes. He couldn't be drunk... could he?
"Miyami Nara..." She introduces herself suspicion in her tone. She keeps her arms right where they are, folded, not about to extend her hand and get it muddy. "Sensei... you're not drunk, are you?" She asks, her tone dangerously close to sounding sassy. Miyami isn't afraid to be bold, call out something when she sees it. Especially when his state might effect their quality of time together. The climb up might have been all for nothing. A waste of time.
Once again, she is reminded of her uncle. Miyami had very similar thoughts when she first met him, and she had grown to love and respect him despite his flaws. The good outweighs the bad when it comes to Kazuya, so perhaps will happen with Neji sensei. Although, the good we have yet to see. He's late, and stumbling around. Not exactly the best first impression.
