Footsteps felt heavy among the rice paddies, the genin's feet slogging through mud as he frantically sought to place distance between himself and his pursuer. The mud stuck to Minoru's shoes, his legs screaming in protest as he trampled the rice plants underfoot. He tried to move swiftly, but his legs could not carry him anywhere near as swiftly as he otherwise would have desired. A trail of pink ran down his face, a mixture of blood - not his own - and ugly tears. It was silent now, save the sloshing sound of his running, though only moments before there had been horrid screams that echoed inside Minoru's heads like the chiming of a clock at midnight.

He cast a glance behind himself, in his wake he saw three fallen bodies, slumped lifelessly in the muddy water of the rice field. His voice escaped him, though a sound resembling a choked sob left his mouth. His eyes, frantic, unfocused, searched the area behind him for that which caused the state of the three unmoving corpses. Minoru could not hear the sound of his heart beating in that ears; in that moment, he felt dead already.

When an opponent drew their eyes from him, Jun found it often that the battle had ended one way or another. Every time it happened, he found himself disappointed. He took a step and was gone long before the last of them turned his eyes back to what had likely once been his friends.

"Their fault, your fault," he thought, voicelessly condemning. "you shouldn't have been here."

As he came to a stop, the only sound he made was the soft splash of his feet meeting water again. It was like the few slow drops of rain before the storm of the survivor's sloshing-about, up to his knees in the water. Jun's eyes fell to the corpses. One of them was larger than the others. In life, it had carried a commanding weight. In its last moments, it had truly understood its error. It was the only one of them that had.

"Don't run." His eyes returned to the enemy left to him. This one had as much right to act on its own as its teacher had to have brought it where it did not belong in the first place. Having known the corpse as a man, Jun knew too that he ought to have been all too well informed of the danger he had put his team in when he brought them to the field. To whatever grisly credit was due to the fallen, he had not faltered even as the revelation of the ramifications of his decision had washed over him. He did not move to run. Of the others though, Jun could not say as much.

"Whether or not they wanted to, they could not. Why would it be fair for me to let you?" The question went unasked, as Jun had as much need to give it voice as he did to chastise the foe for its mistake. An end was enough reprimand.

The rasp of his sword finding its scabbard again filled the air. Jun knew that however disoriented, afraid, and despaired the remainder was, its attention would be drawn to the sound. He did not need to meet it with bare steel to crush it. His gaze itself was ice and death.

Desperate breaths caused Minoru's chest to hurt, a burning sensation that felt like sharp and hot pinpricks running through his skin. His eyes, unfocused, steadied themselves eventually on the form of an approaching figure. The genin - fresh, inexperienced, having never should have been in a situation such as this - could not see the murder's face, hidden as it was behind a mask on the lower face. As the stranger approached, Minoru felt all strength wither out of his body. Though the attacker's blade had been sheathed, Minoru could see it rise again, its next target painfully obvious.

In that moment, his vision slanted, and suddenly he was looking at his shoulders, then his torso, then his midsection and legs before his head fell with a splash into the water, sinking down in the muddy haze as the genin saw his headless corpse topple over, as if it were a puppet with its strings cut.

Startled back to reality by a gasp of fear, as if he were physically choking under the weight of the man's presence alone, Minoru tried to move. He tried to turn his head back around, face forward, and run. Instead, his body only twitched with fear, before his legs gave out and the boy splashed onto his hands and knees in the rice paddies.

How an opponent reacted to his lethal aspect told Jun all that he needed to know about them. Some ran, some screamed, and some spat at him. Many shivered and shrugged off their fears, steeling themselves only to fail to meet his sword with theirs. Some managed as to come so far as to block the blow that followed, only to find that matching Jun's speed would not earn them victory.

What he could tell from those that ran is that they were cowards at their core. What he could tell from those that screamed is that they had fears whose depths exceeded the bleak, dull death that reality could offer them. What he could tell about those that spat is that death meant honour. What he could tell about those who set their fears aside is that no defeat had yet come to truly humble them. What he could tell about those that matched him is that they had yet to truly see him for what he was.

What he could tell from the last soldier is that its reaction was unacceptable. When presented with the truth that the cause of its team's death so thoroughly outmatched it as to be inescapable, it responded not with the stubborn anger that Jun had expected or the mad dash of recreant terror that he had entertained as a plausible ensuing course to its first attempt to flee. Instead, it responded by giving up.

Eyes following it as it collapsed into the water and mud, the taste in Jun's mouth immediately ran sour. Whether it had meant to or not, the failure had surrendered in body as well as mind as its neck laid itself bare to him. If its threat to him had been serious, its head would have been slipped from its shoulders in an instant, but it was nothing to him, so he let its meagre ragged breathing alone fill the air for as long as he cared, until he could stomach his disdain no longer.

"Get up." His voice had drained all the ice from his eyes, which were then left with only his contempt and his disgust. They were all that his enemy would see past the black cloth of the mask that covered his face from his nose down, which meant that his enemy would not see the sneer that grew ever-quicker. "I did not tell you to collapse. Get up and fight. Get up and shout. Were those not your friends? Did they not have names? Why are you not begging for them?"

A shower of hatred, love, grief, and blood poured through Jun's mind and ran ragged across his vision. The images, sounds, and smells of all he had taken and all that had been taken from him spilled across the heinous scene before him and for a moment it all turned black. His friends had once had names. He had become what he had hated. Both turning back and continuing forward were pointless, but so was stopping. A coin flipped in Jun's head and his vision returned to him as a path laid itself before him. The boy that he had missed lay before him.

"Do you not have a life? Beg for it. Fight for it. Then, if you lose, I may give you my permission to die."
