Gravel under feet. A familiar sound but satisfying nonetheless. Faulkner and Ame, who at this time was just a small black pup his red markings not yet present, walked down a path outside of Tanzaku Town. It was one of the paths you could take to a small village called Toharu apparently. He had never heard of the place before today but it was apparently only big enough for one restaurant. Can you imagine that? Only one place to go out to eat all the time, nonsense! Ame playfully bound between Faulkner's legs with each step and the Inuzuka couldn't help but laugh at his companion. They had recently joined the Academy and his parents decided to take him out for celebration, something he wasn't going to say no to. Unfortunately his parents were the kind to go to all the things you had to be an adult to go to and left Faulkner and his ninken to do what they wanted for the day. At least they gave him a good amount of money first.

He grinned a toothy grin and bent down to ruffle Ame behind the ears. The ninken had been his present from the clan for joining the Academy. Almost immediately the two had become inseparable, their personalities matching more than he had ever connected with another person before. Ame was also notably strong for a ninken, even as pup he stood toe to toe with the other Inuzuka Genin's dogs. Faulkner was quite proud of this fact and didn't hesitate to remind the rest of his friends.

"So bud, what're you wanting to do today?" The sun had just peeked behind the clouds, bathing the world in direct light. It was slightly overcast and the air had the bark of cold on it but no bite. Ame yipped and stretched before jumping onto Faulkner's shoulder. The series of licks and laughs that followed really led them no further toward their goals for the day, but they were both happy to have the moment. "I love you too, I do! I do!" Faulkner choked out between his laughs. He had never met someone like Ame before.

The two walked for some time, finding themselves back at the entrance of Tanzaku Town. Ame had tuckered himself out playing for the past few hours and was promptly asleep in Faulkner's arms. The Inuzuka found a comfortable spot against a nearby wall of the entrance and sat, leaning his back against the cool stone. Gently he pet the sleeping pup and enjoyed the peaceful quiet of the day. That quiet was broken as the familiar sound of gravel being displaced filled the air again. It was accompanied by a strong smell of soap? The kind you would find at a washing shop. He looked up to see someone standing at the exit near him. The first thing he noted was it was a girl around his age. The second thing he noticed was her hair. He had never seen pink hair before. She reminded him of cherry blossoms. He had always been a sucker for cherry blossoms.

Today had been a boring, uneventuful day so far. The kind of day that was so lazy that even standing was a chore and going back to bed would have been lovely. No such luck for Yukari, however. Not in the least, in fact mostof the morning had been spent with her washing, drying and folding clothing as well as mending several ripped articles and reapplying buttons. Her hands hurt and her fingers were still wrinkled and the delivery for the washing soap hadn't happened yesterday like it was supposed to. Naturally she leapt at the chance to go to the city, it was something that would be far better than working and made all the sweeter because of the fact she'd not been allowed out in some time. Even though she hadn't been ill in weeks she'd been carefully worried over by her mother, the woman's attentions had become smothering.

She'd asked her dad for permission to go on the errand and, surprisingly he'd agreed. He'd been acting so strangely since both he and her mom had gotten into an ugly argument just after she'd gotten better.

Crunching stones under her worn, white shoes was accompanied by the sound of birds calling and the air carried with it that smokey sort of haze that only the bigger towns seemed to have – a combination of different pollutions that wasn't really present in her own little town. It smelled like excitement. Her pace picked up as she neared her destination and she paused, startling slightly as a boy moved. She'd been so wrapped up in her own thoughts that she'd nearly walked right into him!

He was cute enough, she supposed, her having reached the age only recently where boys were just beginning to lose their cooties. White hair and wild eyes and tan skin. He also seemed to not have an ounce of fat on him and smelled like forests and fur. He, however, was not the object of her immediate attentions. There was a puppy and it was far more important that she coo over the dog than anything else.

“Oh, excuse me! I'm so sorry, I didn't see you there. I hope I didn't knock gravel at you?” She spoke to the boy, crouching down to look at the pup in his lap. “Aww, such a cute puppy! What's his name? How old is he?”

In an instant the cherry blossom fell upon the two of them. Ame yawned widely and upon seeing the newcomer, immediately leapt from Faulkner's lap and began circling and sniffing the girl. Faulkner gave an embarrassed laugh and shook his head rapidly. "No gravel was thrown our way, thank you for asking though. Sorry about Ame, he loves new people. He just turned 9 months last week!" Faulkner always talked about his companion with such gusto. Ame was his best friend after all. Ame let out a small bark and bit at the girls white shoes causing Faulkner to reach out and scoop the dog up.

"I'm so sorry miss, he's in this phase right now where he'll just chew on anything. It's cute, until he eats your shirt." Faulkner held up Ame so the two looked eye to eye. At the shirt comment the pup barked once and then looked away. "Don't you dare try and say I was the one who ate it! It was you, we both know it! If I was the one who had eaten it I would've at least put some barbecue sauce on it first!" He let out another laugh as Ame struggled to chew on the hands that held him in place. Remembering the girl in front of him, Faulkner let Ame go and stood.

"I'm Faulkner, that's Ame, pleasure to meet you!" He grinned widely, exposing his canines, just one of his feral qualities. Ame ran to the side of the girl and placed a paw on the girl's white shoes. Puppy dog eyes stared up at the newcomer and Faulkner let out a scoff. "He wants you to pet him behind the ears. He loves that. He's such a little attention hog." The ninken broke it's cutesy character to turn and growl at Faulkner for a second or two before turning back to stare up at the pink-haired girl. Again, Faulkner had never seen someone with hair like that. It was so unique and lovely. The smell of soap was a little weird though, but then again, he could talk to dogs so weird was a pretty subjective term.

Small, needle-sharp puppy teeth worried at the worn leather of her shoes for a brief instant before they were promptly moved away. A soft giggle left her throat as she watched both master and his dog for a moment. “Nine months? Well, that explains why he's chewing then. His puppy teeth are gonna fall out soon and it's uncomfortable, huh?” She asked the dog, knowing full well he couldn't answer her. After all, talking to dogs was probably something magical for a ninja and definitely not an ability that a simple wash girl would ever have. “I bet your mouth's all itchy!”

“I'm Yukari, it's very nice to meet you both. Are you from Tanzaku? I've never seen you before and I'm sure I'd recognize this handsome guy!”
She said, kneeling down in the pebbles to reach out her hand – first for Ame to sniff and then to give out the oh-so-desired scritches. It seemed that she was exceptionally weak to puppy eyes. Time rounded stones dug into her knees, reminding her of the punishment her father often gave her when she'd done poorly in class. Wrinkled, dried peas were far worse than these smooth pebbles in her opinion.

She could understand having missed actually meeting this boy in the hustle and bustle of the city, handsome though he was, but it seemed odd to her that she'd never even glanced him. After all, silver hair wasn't exactly common on anyone under sixty. Somehow, though, it seemed to suit him. The grin he gave her caused a small flutter in her chest, like a tiny sparrow beating its wings againstthe bars of a cage. How odd, she'd never been nervous to meet someone before. Was this a late onset of shyness? She didn't feel shy... Attention snapped back to Ame, soft smile reaching her eyes as she looked him over. Even in this awkward puppy stage it was easy to see he was going to grow into a very fine dog. He was probably very expensive and likely had a longer pedigree than she did.

“I hope you only chewed the shirt and didn't actually swallow it. I bet that would give you quite a tummy ache.” Eyes darting away from the puppy for a moment she took a second to gauge Faulkner and his reaction to her playing with Ame. Some people got quite possessive over their pets and she didn't want to upset him, but deciding that she didn't find displeasure but instead pride she continued her affection to the puppy.

“Though I'm sure nobody could stay mad at you for that, huh? You're still young, after all. There's a lot to learn and you've only had nine months to do it. You're way ahead of us humans, most of us are only learning how to crawl at nine months and here you are, being so good and saying hello so nicely. You're doing great! You know who's the best, most handsome puppy in the whole world? You are!”
She cooed sweetly, using both hands to rub around the often worked muscles at the base of the ears before sliding her fingers gently up the soft leather and moving back down. Not quite a scratching, but more of a massage. Nimble and sure she would being to give the puppy a rubdown massage instead of simply just stroking fur, similar to what trainers did for expensive racehorses.

Looking up at Faulkner she offered a toothy grin of her own, though her own fangs were far more rounded. “I really love dogs so much, he's just great. You're really lucky to have him. I'd always wanted a dog but my dad won't allow me to have a pet. He says it would cause trouble with my studies...” she explained, not sure why she was offering the information. It wasn't relevant or important but she didn't want to just leave now. She wanted to stay and get to know this undomesticated pair. It would be nice to be able to be around someone her own age for once, there was nobody in Toharu that was a good age to play with since Yui had moved away four years ago. Plus, Faulkner came with the bonus of a puppy to love on! “What are your plans today? I've got some errands to run here but I was wondering if you'd like to come with and keep me company? Of course if you have other things to do, don't worry about it!”

A sniff quickly followed by a single lick signaled that Ame was ready for the scratches to come. Faulkner couldn't help but smile at the scene. His pup sure was special and something about this girl, Yukari she had said her name was, made him smile too. "We're actually from Konohagakure. We're here on a kind of vacation celebration thing." Ame closed his eyes under the fingers of Yukari, the edges of it's mouth pulling up into one of those smiles only dogs have. Each scratch lowered his head until eventually he just plopped over onto his back, exposing his belly to the girl. Faulkner raised an eyebrow to his companion.

"He really likes you! I've never seen him show his belly to anyone but me. Means he's super comfortable around you." He couldn't blame the dog. This soap-scented cherry blossom was one of those rare people in the world. Someone who's presence radiated a warmth. She was like a fireplace in winter. Faulkner, and he assumed Ame, just wanted to be closer to her. The dog hammed it up, pink tongue lolling out to the side of his mouth. A hearty laugh escaped the Inuzuka; he had never seen his friend act like this. He looked at the girl playing and his eyes grew soft. He wondered what would happen if he were from Tanzaku and had more time with someone like Yukari. Could he somehow rope more time with her if he played Ame as a trump card?

After a wonderful few moments the girl looked up at him, causing him to dart his eyes away as fast as possible. Red tinged his cheeks. He hadn't realized how hard he had been staring at her but who could blame him? It wasn't every day you met someone who made you wonder what every day previously had been good for. Yukari went on, complimenting the dog. A pang of something tugged at the back of his mind. Was it jealousy? How strange, he thought, that he'd be jealous of his best friend for a girl's attention. His suspicions were confirmed when she looked up again with a grin that he could've sworn couldn't be natural. She had to have put some kind of Genjutsu on herself to be so charming. Her blue eyes were so kind. Ame let out a delighted yip after even more praise. He sure was loving this.

"I've always gotten along with dogs better than people myself. The don't lie or pretend. When they're angry they growl, when they're happy they wag their tails. You don't have to try to decipher what they mean when you're talking to them. You don't have to try to impress them." The last sentence felt weird as it came out. It wasn't until after he had said it that he realized he wanted to impress Yukari. "And yeah, I am lucky to have Ame. He was given to me as part of my clan's rite of passage. Well, given isn't really the right word. He chose me actually. Not sure what the little guy sees in me, but I've never been happier than the day he waddled up to me. He was so fat a few months ago, just a little chubby ball of fur and teeth. He came up and licked my hand before showing me his belly just like he showed you. We've been inseparable ever since." If only that meant he'd spend more time with Yukari too.

The proposition to spend the day helping the pink-haired girl caused a few reactions. Firstly, Ame rolled over to his feet and bounded around her feet yipping excitedly. Secondly, the red in Faulkner's cheeks grew deeper. He hadn't expected her to say that; not that it wasn't something he wanted but she seemed so out of reach somehow. Like she was in a completely different world than he was. "Well, Ame would kill me if I said no, not that I would even if he wasn't so excited, that's not what I meant. I, uh, er..." He was so flustered for some reason. He wasn't entirely sure what was going on but he took a deep breath and started over. "I'd love to!" Ame's tail wagged furiously and he ran between Yukari and Faulkner, darting between legs and kicking up gravel. Another laugh, he couldn't remember the last time he had laughed this much, "I mean, we would love to."

Puppy kisses on her hand delighted her, fingers deftly working to find all the right places to scratch and rub on what would one day be a fierce, intimidating ninken. For now, however, ferocity was far overshadowed by sweetness. “Konohagakure... That...” Her eyes widened, mouth parting slightly as she looked up at her human companion for the day. Looking around she added in a hurried whisper, awed by her new companion. “That means you're a ninja? That's so cool! You're amazing! Why are you here? Are you on a mission?”

The ingenue looked quite impressed, having only ever seen one shinobi for sure in her life – the milky-eyed man that had stopped to visit her parents just a few weeks before. It wasn't often that a simple girl got to meet such impressive people. Looking back down at the wiggling pile of puppy joy she smiled again, scratching lightly with her fingernails just where his ribcage dipped down to become actualy puppy belly. He really was such a sweet puppy, it was difficult for her to imagine him as a fierce ninja dog fighting enemies. “Really? I feel very special then for him to trust me so much. I like him a lot too, he's a good boy. I have to say though, I'm probably going to be ruined for any other puppy petting forever.” She laughed out, casting a small wink to Faulkner. Of couse she'd pet other puppies in her life, but this would definitely be a memory she'd keep close to heart. This boring day turned newly exciting all from the simple presence of a ninja boy and his ninja dog. It was like something out of a fairy tale – she the mundane heroine swept away by a dashing hero and his magical canid companion.

“Dogs are better than people for the most part, I think really.” Yukari said standing up and knocking a few pebbles off her knees after giving Ame one more pat. Little dents remained on her skin and they'd ache for a bit, but it was worth it to have gotten to pet on the exuberant pup. Having a pet was something she'd hope to do one day when she was older and on her own. Maybe she could get a dog. Would ninja let someone adopt retired ninken? She'd have to ask about that one day. Dogs were great but she'd love to be able to offer one that had worked hard a place where they could just relax and not have to worry about anything. “Not only do they not lie or hide their feelings, they are loyal. If you're good to them then they'll be good to you, and you don't have to worry about them betraying you ever. And they don't ever ask for too much, all they want is food and love and kindness and in return they give you all of their everything. I wish more people were like dogs, the world would be a much better place if they were. Dogs are the best sort of people.”

Grinning she tucked her hands behind her back, her nose crinkling slightly. “So, I can't say I blame you for preferring his company to people...” She paused, pondering his words. What, she wondered, did it feel like to be chosen like that? Was it something normal for him or did he see it as special as she did?

“So, your clan's rite of passage? Everyone in your family gets to have a dog? And they get picked? That's... actually really cool and makes it even more awesome. It's like the kind of bond you read about in a book! Can you tell me more? Oh, are you allowed to tell me more? I don't want to be nosy in important secrets, it's just, well, you're - it's so cool!” She explained, her face heating up as a blush covered her fair features, darkening to the same color as her abused knees quickly as she corrected her flub. She sounded like an idiot, she was sure, fawning over him like this. He probably had lots of girls, interesting ninja girls no less trained to be amazing and perfect, talking to him all the time. She was sure that she was far too mundane to even be allowed a glimpse at his life... Wash girls didn't get exciting lives. Was girls got laundry and sewing and sore hands. But then, surprising words reached her ears. He did want to spend time with her! Laughing to cover her embarrassment, she reached forward with her right hand with the intent to hold his left and pull him along with her into town. If he'd never been here before she was sure she could show him some fun things, like the arcade and the comic shop and maybe even a sweets shop.

“There's a lot of stuff to do here, actually.” She explained, face heating further as she belatedly realized she'd grabbed his hand but not moving to release it unless he pulled away or didn't allow the contact in the first place. “There's three arcades, and a lot of places to eat if you like that. There's a sushi place where all the sushi goes round and round on conveyor belts and when you turn in your plates at the little box on the table it gives you gachapon capsules! There's also a place that makes pretty suckers shaped like dragons or unicorns or whatever you ask for. Um... Oh there's a place where you can go and challenge Sumo wrestlers and of you win you get a prize and your picture on the wall! They do a Kabuki show in the evenings in the main square when the weather is nice, that's always fun. There's all sorts of theme cafe here if you have a thing you like. There's even an owl cafe where they have real owls! There's a little amusement park up on the North side that's got little rides and games and a haunted house. They have a building for wax people in there. Honestly, they're kind of creepy, they look very real but there's something that's just not quite right with them if that makes sense?”

She paused, looking over at him and being mindful of her steps so she didn't accidentally step on or kick the puppy dancing between their legs. Taking a deep breath she paused, waiting for a reply as she only just realized she'd gotten far too caught up in talking for him to have a chance to reply. She wondered if there was such a thing as blush burn, and if there was she was fairly sure she was well on her way to getting it.

She...she thinks I'm amazing?! The thought of it was so outrageous and pleasant at the same time his mind just couldn't handle it. In Konoha he was just another academy student, another Inuzuka. It seemed too good to be true that the first girl he had really talked to; most of the other girls ignored him, something about being too wild to be human; but this pink-haired girl thought he was cool? He almost joined Ame in his leaps of joy but with all the self-restraint he hadn't trained he managed to remain still. His blush deepened however and he found it increasingly hard to look Yukari in the eyes. "We just joined the Academy and my parents took me here to celebrate. Then they ran off to do stuff I'm apparently not old enough to know about." He shuddered at the thought of what that might actually mean. "So I've just been hanging with Ame for most of the morning."

The notion that she'd be ruined for other puppies was hilarious for some reason. On the one hand, Ame definitely wasn't normal and would probably one of the only ninken a girl in Tanzaku Town would meet. On the other hand the notion was shared by Faulkner. He didn't think he could ever look at pink hair the same ever again. The wink was so small and casual that he almost missed it, but he hadn't just imagined that, had he? His heartbeat flooded his ears and confusion washed over him. The sudden urge to run filled his legs but his brain told him if he did he would regret it forever.

Her next few words were like drinking water after a long run. It was so refreshing to hear someone who's views so aligned with his. There was no such thing as bad dogs, just bad owners. He had always been referred to as more dog than boy, would Yukari like that or would she treat him like the other girls did and throw sticks and yell fetch? His questions would have to wait, Yukari's inquisitive words snapped him away. She wanted to know more about his clan. He knew not to say too much, but that didn't mean he had to stay silent.

"Not everyone, just when you become a ninja. I've even heard at some points you might be chosen by more than one ninken! My mom has two and my uncle, he has three!" Ame stopped his jumping and whined, biting his master lightly on the leg, "I'm not saying you're not enough Ame, you know I think you're the best thing to ever happen to me. I'm just saying, wouldn't it be cool if you had a brother or sister to hang out with all the time?" Or a really cute girl He thought as he looked over at Yukari. "He may not look like it now, but Ame is gonna one day be super strong! My clan uses ninken in a bunch of taijutsu techniques. When we get good enough, he'll even be able to transform to look just like me. Right now though, we're both a bit...rough around the edges." Truthfully his last attempt at Transformation was something out of a nightmare, something half human, half dog, and half just really bad.

Her laugh filled his ears again, it was light and singsongy almost. He could listen to it for- His eyes darted down as something soft grabbed his hand. Yukari had reached down and grabbed his hand! A soft tug and she was off toward the town proper. He didn't attempt to pull his hand away, instead he gave into his whims and entwined his fingers with hers. His heart stopped racing and a feeling of peace took over the flustered confusion he had felt previously. Ame stopped and stared at the scene in front of him, head tilting to the side in typical puppy confusion. He listened as her soft voice rushed at a mile-a-minute. A smile slowly spread across his lips. It wasn't big or toothy but one of content. Listening to her talk was so peaceful and she seemed so excited about showing him the town. He felt honored to spend the day with such an interesting person.

"All of it, I want to see it all with you."

Her nose wrinkled at the thought of parents, anyone's parents doing the things adults came to Tanzaku to do. Gross and better not to go into detail. Old people shouldn't even kiss, let alone do the things adults went to the red district to do. “Well, since they left then we'll just celebrate together! My parents don't expect me to be back until late tonight anyway, so as long as I check in on the soap delivery and make sure it gets taken there tonight or tomorrow morning it'll be fine. My family owns a laundry shop so it's important we have the soap or we can't clean clothes, after all.” She explained as she headed directly to the shopping area. “So I'll check there first and then we can do everything else without having to worry about it.” People bustled about going through their normal day; this wasn't really an area that the tourists frequented but a staple for those living in the town and outlying areas.

“Wow, but could you imagine trying to give enough love to three puppies all at once? It must have been difficult to divide their attention like that, like having twins or triplets! I bet it's nice to have each other though, you never have to worry about being lonely.” A small moment of commiseration there for herself, wishing that she could have that sort of bond with someone. She was torn between wanting to rush forward and show Faulkner everything and walking slowly so that she could take her time holding his hand. It was inevitable that he'd let go at some point, people needed their hands after all, but his fingers twisting into hers was nice. Much nicer than when that awful Ryuske had tried to hold her hand at the Spring festival and it was all clammy and sticky and he wouldn't take no for an answer, Faulkner's hand was warm and slightly bigger than her own and she very much wanted to hold it, or perhaps wrap her other arm around his and slip close to him like she'd seen girls in movies do. That would be far too inappropriate though, right? Her heart fluttered and a manic giggle fought desperately to make its way out of her chest as she realized how delicate her hand seemed in his, even with her washing callouses.

She felt like a princess and the way he had looked at her, as though she was everything good in the world, made her feel at once both beautiful and self-conscious. She felt a moment of guilt, wondering if there was a girl he had waiting for him back in his village who felt the same way, but she viciously stomped that away. She'd not done anything wrong, and it wasn't illegal to like someone. All she'd done was hold his hand, there was no crime in that. Besides, he'd likely go off to live his ninja life and she'd never see him again. Wanting a fond memory of something special might be a little selfish, but hopefully his ninja girlfriend could understand if she ever found out.

“You're right, Ame's still a puppy but if you look you can tell he's going to be big. Look at his feet, he'll probably be big enough to ride on when he's done growing! Plus, if you've just started training then I'm sure you'll have all those abilities down soon. Ame wouldn't have picked you if you weren't good together, right? Nobody's good at anything they do at first, really.” Turning sideways to slip through a crowd of people in front of a booth selling discount fresh produce she guided him closer to herself, shoulders very nearly touching as she wormed her way through the group. How was he so warm? He smelled nice too... like deep forest filled with mahogany and vetiver, and rich earth, and home, and a little like sunshine, and puppy, and that confusing smell that had no words beyond male. That man smell was something that she'd not really liked when it was on stale laundry, but it wasn't so bad on warm boy. After a moment they emerged on the other side and she cast him an apologetic smile, pausing to make sure Ame was able to keep up and not get stepped on – something he should have been able to do if he'd followed his human as closely as he had been.

“So, what is Taijutsu exactly? Like, I know it's fighting but I don't really understand what makes it different?” She asked, slipping into the main office of the distribution center so she could ask on the shipment. Left hand dipped into her right pocket, pulling out a slip of paper with a series of numbers on it as she moved toward the desk. It was certainly the more awkward of hands to use to get that slip, but she wanted to hold on as long as she could.

“This shouldn't take long, Faulkner. I'm sorry for the wait.” She apologized, enjoying the way his name felt on her tongue and on her lips. It was something her mother had mentioned once before, if you used people's names when you greeted them they would like you more and come to the shop more. She hoped that if she used his name enough he'd like her enough to come visit her again. Setting the paper on the desk the clerk handed her a slip to fill out for her request. A small, apologetic squeeze on the hand she'd been holding as all she could manage before she slipped her hand out to write her name and complaint for their records. It was disappointing that she'd had to let go so soon. The few short minutes from the gate to here hadn't been enough. Maybe she'd be able to find a way to hold his hand again though?

Oh, a laundry shop. That explains the soap smell then. Even through the fog of excitement that hung in his head from holding her hand, that thought managed to squeeze it's way through. As they walked through the town Faulkner couldn't help but want to take charge of the two. Not in some kind of masculine display of power but instead he wanted to show off that he was the one holding Yukari's hand. That out of everyone in Tanzaku he was the one she had chosen to spend the day with. He could think of no way to do this however and instead just allowed the girl to lead. He knew he didn't have to announce to the world what he already knew. That he had to be the luckiest guy in Tanzaku.

Something about the way she spoke when she brought up never being lonely piqued his interest. He was reminded that he knew nothing about her other than her name and her parent's career. What did she have to keep her company at home? Who did she have to watch over her and keep her safe? Ame would jump through any hoop to protect Faulkner and likewise he would do the same for his ninken. Would anyone jump through hoops for Yukari? He squeezed her hand a little tighter, not enough to hurt but enough to make fully sure he was keeping up with her. If she has no one, I'll change that. If she has someone, now she has us too He pledged to himself and to Ame, the dog struggling to stay focused on following the pair instead of running off to chase smells and sounds.

He was going to respond to her talking about Ame and his feet but the words muddled and melted in his mind when they grew even closer to each other. Their shoulders nearly touched as they tried to make their way through a particularly dense part of the crowd. All he could think of was how soft she was. Even her calloused hands were softer than any other he had held. Though those had only ever belonged to members of his clan and shinobi life was anything but easy on the skin. Under the soap smell she had the scent of sweetness that girls had. She gave him a smile when they came out of the other side and he felt like his knees would buckle under him. There was just something so charming about her. Ame bounded through the crowd before sitting in front of the two. His hind leg bolted behind his ear scratching fervently at some unknown irritation.

The trio continued, making their way into some office. "Taijutsu is just hand-to-hand combat. Sometimes you can add chakra to it, but most of the time it's just like, throwing a punch or a kick and adding some name to it. I don't really get how it works myself but I've been told I'm pretty okay at it." He had to be, since his Ninjutsu and Genjutsu abilities had proven to be pretty subpar so far. He noticed her awkwardly reach across herself to produce an envelope. The idea of her going through so much trouble to keep holding his hand confused him. Why was she doing that? Then she said his name and he honestly didn't care why she did what she did. It was nice how she pronounced it. Most of the time people could never get it right since he was named after an old relative who had come from a far away place. She had managed to say it perfectly though.

She let go of his hand. He frowned at the sudden absence of her skin on his. It had only been a short time, but he had grown so accustomed to it. He watched her writing something on the paper, noting that her handwriting was much, MUCH better than his. Her words were neat and organized and all the letters were the same size. He liked how she wrote, maybe he would ask her address so they could write back and forth to each other after he returned home? He didn't know why he did it, couldn't say what possessed him to do so but he approached her from behind and wrapped an arm around her. His hand rested on her side and Ame struggled to force his way between their legs. He had no earthly idea why, but he wanted to hold her in that moment. His face was as red as he thought anything could ever be and he hoped Yukari wouldn't hate him for it.

Meticulous hand wrote out the information, the kanji small and precise as it had to be for writing labels. 'One must put their best forward in all things.' Her mother had often told her, and it was something that Yukari ascribed to do. Each day she tried to do her best in all things, and to do it better than she had in times before. One day in the future it would become her nindo, but for now it was purely a simple girl trying to do her very best and please her parents. After all, no man would want to marry her if she wasn't good enough in every way – something that her father reminded her of every time she fell short of his standards.

She jumped in surprise, small scratch of ink slipping off the paper on the right, as a warm arm wrapped about her middle. Pressure on her ankle caused her to slip her foot forward slightly to allow Ame where he wanted to be, though this caused her to bump back against Faulkner as she stood. The heat of his chest radiated into her back as they pressed together, the clerk taking the slip with an amused laugh as he slipped off into the back room to check on the delivery. He was so warm! She closed her eyes and leaned back against him as she straightened to standing. Even now he was a good bit larger than her, broader and taller and just the right size to rest against as the clerk checked on the shipment. It felt nice to be held, even if at the same time her nerves were singing at her to run because it was too embarrassing for her little mind to handle. Were all ninja boys so free with physical contact, or was this because of how he was raised, or did he actually like her?

The bell of the door rang welcome as another patron entered, and in just that moment the clerk stepped back out.

“Ah, it seems as though your usual courier is ill and so the delivery to Toharu was delayed. It's on its was now, however and should be there within the hour.”
The man explained and, through the red glow on her cheeks that she was sure could be seen from space, Yukari nodded.

“Okay, thank you.”
She commented, moving to turn to face Faulkner within the confines of his grasp so she could speak with him. "Okay Faulkner, we can go to the-" Her good mood and her sentence, however, were abruptly cut short at seeing the newest patron of the shop standing behind the unlikely pair and the puppy.

“Ah, well that saves me from having to fill out a form!”
The voice of another young man – clear and confident – filled the shop and crushed Yukari's words beneath it. This young man likely two or three years older, as opposed to the pair curled around each other, was a study in privilege. Hair groomed immaculately, clothing of the finest make, skin clear and without callous or scar – the son of a wealthy family who had never known physical labor in his life. Even his posture, hands stuck casually into pockets and head tilted to the right and slightly up as though he was looking down at the two. “Mother asked me to check in on where the tea was, she's ordered a first picking white tea for the bath house.” He mentioned casually, a subtle-for-children drop of 'look how well off we are'.

“Well, I hope she enjoys it more than she did the green.” Yukari responded, voice far more brittle than it had ever been with Faulkner today. Her body was tense as she pressed into her current companion more firmly. She really wasn't Ryuske's biggest fan, though her parents often pushed her at the boy – as good as a marriage could get for a girl in their town.

“Ah, sorry, didn't see you there.” Ryuske's false apology hung heave in the air as he walked forward and clapped Faulkner on the shoulder. “Who is your friend, Yu-koi? If you're so cold, I can give you my jacket. You can come have a nice soak at the onsen, too.”

Only Ame can see the look of absolute disgust roll across her features as she looks at the floor, tucking her face down and away from both would-be suitors and pressing her forehead against Faulkner's chest as she braced for what would likely be an unpleasant encounter. Ryuske's hand then slipped forward to grab Yukari's arm, intent on pulling her away.

Racing was an understatement. Faulkner's heart was a tempest in his chest. Would Yukari be angry that he was so forward? He hoped not. Now that he was closer to her she smelled less like soap and more like...something. Something he couldn't place his finger on but that he wished he could bottle and save for later. Later, the notion made his heart slow from a hurricane to a tropical storm. What would happen after today? He had already decided to write her if she would let him, but would that be enough? Would words and ink replace how she felt now, in his arms? He doubted it, but these feelings were all so new. He had no idea what to do or how to act. Heat touched his cheeks and the back of his neck as she leaned back into him. His eyes widened and he did his best to keep his breathing in check. He hoped she wouldn't feel his heart beating but that was like asking lightning not to hear the thunder that followed. She turned to face him. He had never been this close to a girl that wasn't his mom. If it always felt like this then he never wanted to not be near someone. Yukari's mood shifted so suddenly that he almost felt whiplash from it.

Faulkner turned to face the newcomer; the apparent source of Yukari's displeasure. He radiated upper class. Where Faulkner spent his days training and running with the ninken this guy looked like he spent the days bossing around others less lucky than him. The Inuzuka felt that everything in life had to be earned, worked for. Silver spoons were something he despised and detested and this new guy looked like he had never eaten with any other utensil.

The girl in his arms felt different when she spoke to the guy. She was more tense than before. He squeezed her waist slightly tighter in response, hoping to give her some kind of relief from whatever was eating away at her.

This guy, whoever he was, felt he had the right to lay a hand on him. His eyes hardened, taking on a more feral look. He gave a fake smile back making sure to emphasize his sharp canines. "No problem, I wish I could say the same thing but I could smell you before you opened the door." Ame let out a sympathetic whine as he saw Yukari's expression from being call Yu-koi. The pup jumped up into her arms and bit at Ryuske's hand before giving him an impressive growl for a dog his size. Faulkner gave his friend a mental high five and made a note to get a special treat for Ame later.

“No thanks, I don't need your jacket and I'm just fine right where I am.” Rebuffing the boy her parents had been pushing her to was both frightening and at the same time exhilarating. A tightening of the arm about her middle, though she wasn't sure if it was to offer comfort to herself or to Faulkner, but it brought her a small sense of peace. He seemed calm and collected otherwise, though she was not sure if he was actually feeling assured or if this was some sort of shinobi training to not allow others to see your true feelings. She envied his confidence and composure. What she wouldn't give to be able to hold the same sort of posture. To be able to face the things that disturbed her with the confidence of the silver-haired boy would be a blessing. Subconsciously she moved her feet out of Faulkner's path slightly so that if he needed to he could move easier without getting tangled in her legs.

A small glance up at Faulkner caused something to clench almost painfully in her chest. Gone was the playful puppy of a boy and in his place a wild dog had taken over. Beneath she could still see the same features, but it had been as though a veil had been lifted. The softer characteristics and warmth in his eyes had gone leaving behind only flint and fang. She wasn't afraid of him, there was no need for her to be, but it hurt that his good mood on his special day had been spoiled. She vowed that she would do her best to make the day right again, even if she had to drain every last Ryo from her allowance and the small wages she earned at the shop.

“Well, if you want to know who he is why don't you ask him? He can speak, you know.”
Her mouth had opened in preparation to say something more to Ryuske, perhaps to tell him off further, but suddenly she found her arms full of snapping, snarling puppy. Quickly she adjusted her arms so as not to drop him, Ame had trusted her enough to hold him for whatever he was doing and she'd not betray that loyalty. Confused, she looked up to see what had driven the previously sweet dog to such sudden aggression. He was guarding her from something, but what? She found the target of the pup's ire swiftly retreating, as Ryuske's cry of pain filled the air.

“It bit me - that stupid mutt bit me! You'll pay for that!” Twin pinpricks of blood welled up on the older boy's hand as he quickly stepped back, clutching the injured appendage to his chest as though he had just lost a digit. Incredulity covered his features for a moment before his other hand rose in the air intent on striking the creature that had caused him pain, or perhaps the girl that had turned away from him with his original target. Without care to her own person Yukari was braced to use her own body to shield the puppy in her arms from harm, a small squeak of distress unable to be held in. A strike to her would hurt, it did the last time he'd raised a hand to her, but the blow from the larger boy she felt could truly injure Ame's tiny self. The well-being of another far outweighed her own in her mind.

Raw primal instinct surged through the boy as Ryuske raised a hand in aggression. He wouldn't allow Yukari or Ame to be struck, that was certain. A thin veil of chakra covered his body as he let go of the pair and swiftly reached out to grab the other's wrist. His feral qualities were accented now, teeth and nails sharpened to almost wild limits. His grip on Ryuske's wrist was firm but restrained. He felt how weak the boy was under his hands, how little he had to work for what he had gotten in life. It was scary how strong he felt at that moment. He was never one to know his own strength; training with ninken and older members of his clan was no real judge of his power. "I don't know who you are, but no amount of wealth will ever let you lay a finger on something I care about." He snarled through clenched teeth, his grip tightening slightly under his words.

He did not know how Yukari would act to such a display but at that moment he cared more about their safety than the repercussions for his action. Ame would one day fight alongside him, protect him and all those he cared about. It would be unjust to not do the same for his friend. That, and the thought of a bruised Yukari was one that he couldn't stomach.

Blue eyes widened, not in fear but in surprise; wondering at the speed of the shinobi that had just held her in such a gentle embrace and had moved so quickly to defend. Swiftly his nails thickened and grew dangerous points as did his teeth. She had never seen him look so dangerous, and would not again for many years, but it suited him. In that instant she wondered if it hurt, these physical transformations, or if he simply was allowing the veneer of civilization to fall away and reveal what lived inside. Did he struggle, she wondered, to fit in with his peers; or were all shinobi as such? Is that why they were feared and sometimes even revered – that they were so far beyond the abilities of normal people they seemed touched by powers beyond ken?

The aggressor, Ryuske, had no such time for thoughts. There was nothing in his head of the higher human, instead the primitive brain sought to discern which reflex to use – fight or flight. On one hand, he was furious and indignant and wanted badly to strike at those he felt he could lord over. On the other, this new opponent was stronger, faster and seemed far more capable than himself. In the end, flight won over and the boy struggled to pull his arm away. Later, once his mind had cleared of terror, he might seek out guards and would certainly find some way to punish Yukari for this but for now the primary objective was to get away. Should he manage to pull away he would flee out the door, if not he would struggle against the grip of Faulkner. Either way, he would cry out in supplication for assistance. “Help! He's attacking me! Somebody please help me!”

Yukari did not appear to be frightened, merely stepping back and out of the way for whatever Faulkner needed to do. A delicate hand, the other left cradling the puppy, lifted away to gently touch her guard's shoulder. When she spoke, it was gentle – no tremble of fear or rasp of anger – but of quiet confidence. No great words of supplication came forth, no chastisement, rebuke or disapproval. It was the confidence of a lady for her knight, support in a single phrase with a request to attend. “Faulkner, let's not let him ruin your special day.”

A weak wriggling wrist reminded Faulkner of who exactly he was holding. This wasn't another ninken or clansmember, this was just a civilian. He let the boy go, his features returning to normal as Ryuske fled the door. The sounds of him crying gave the Inuzuka mixed feelings. While he was happy to have sent the guy reeling, he worried what would happen when someone with that much wealth cried wolf. A soft hand on his shoulder brought him back to the more pressing matter of Yukari and Ame. Luckily he had been fast enough to stop them from being harmed; he would have to thank the other ninken for training him so well.

"Yeah, sorry about that. Dunno what came over me, but the thought of someone hurting something close to me kind of just..." He looked down at his hands for a moment, unsure of what had really just happened. He shook his head free of the doubts and worries. As Yukari said, this was his special day and he had a special person to spend it with. Giving her a content smile he nodded. Ame squirmed in the girl's arms before jumping back down to the ground and trotting over to Faulkner. The pup rubbed fuzzy head against the boy's leg, proud of how ninken-esque he had become in the moment.

He noticed that he missed Yukari's warmth in his hands and arms but the sudden outburst of his more feral qualities worried him to get close again. He would let her make that move should she wish. He wanted to go on seeing the town with her but unfortunately he didn't have the knowledge of Tanzaku Town needed to lead the way. Awkwardly he shuffled his feet, "So what do you want to do now?"

As Ryuske scrambled out the door Yukari suddenly found herself with an arm full of wiggling puppy that she willingly allowed to leave her grasp. Apologies flowed from Faulkner, though she wasn't entirely sure as to why. He'd done nothing wrong. It wasn't as though he'd hurt Ryuske or had turned on anyone – he simply had stopped the other boys attack. Sure, he'd looked intimidating but that wasn't exactly a crime. However, once the chakra had faded away and Faulker was more boy than dog again, he seemed a bit unsure of himself.

“No need to apologize, you didn't do anything bad.” Yukari gave voice to her thoughts, moving forward again. Her hand remained on his shoulder, curling over it as she fitted against his side. Hopefully he would understand what she was trying to say without words: 'Hold me.' “And thank you for protecting me.”

“We can do anything you want, really. Are you hungry? We could go to Gachapon Sushi or to Hibachi Royale.” Her left hand took a moment to smooth down the soft fabric of her skirt and brush away black dog fur from the pink weave. It wasn't really an act of cleaning, more of a nervous fidget for her to have something to do with her spare hand. Her heart was still fluttering frantically against its ivory cage and she was just sure he could hear it. “Or if you aren't hungry we could go to the arcade or the theme park? I'm not too good at arcade games, but they're still fun. The park has lots of fun rides that take you up and drop you, and theres a mirror walk in it that is like a maze. Then again, that's probably less interesting to you since I'm sure you do all sorts of things that are exciting!”

It seemed that Yukari hadn't been run off by his display, that was a relief. Thankfully he took a deep breath and locked eyes with Ame. The ebony pup gave him a small bark of reassurance as Yukari's body language invited him once more. He took a step toward her and draped an arm around her shoulder, his hand petting the dog in her arm. He enjoyed that his ninken liked her around so much; he did too.

"Yeah, I could totally go for something to eat!" He said through grinning teeth. "My parents gave me a good bit of money as a gift for making into the academy so it's all on me." Ame gave another small bark before leaping down out of the pink-haired girl's arms. He circled once or twice sniffing the air and then pointing his head down to the East. "Ame isn't super into sushi, so would you mind if we went to the Hibachi Royale? Steak is kind of a delicacy for him so I'm sure he'd like you a lot more if you said yes."

His eyes darted between the two and his chest filled with happiness. His friend had never liked anyone as fast as he liked Yukari and truth be told he felt the same way. Her hair was the most striking attribute he had ever seen on another person. How did she get it so pink? Was it natural, had to be hair dye right? He couldn't smell any if that was the case. Her eyes were a sparkling blue, one that he could easily get lost in like a ship at sea. Something about being around her clicked and he wondered what tomorrow would be like without her.

"I'm not very good at arcade games either, but maybe that just makes it more fair, right? We can go on the rides after we eat, unless you don't htink you can stomach it?" He gave her a playful wink but at the same time it was a valid question. Some people couldn't hold their lunch when they went on rides. Yukari didn't look like the kind of person to spill her guts but then again, Ame didn't look like the kind of dog that could transform into a human, but he would one day.

Cheerfully her hair bobbed behind her as she nodded. “Of course! The hibachi is really good, and it's fun too. They do a little show with the food!” Her free hand mimicked a rapid chopping motion and then an imaginary flipping of food as she pressed against him in a demi hug before beginning to lead the way out of the distribution center. The perplexed and amused eyes of the clerk following them as the door jingled in their wake. Kids these days.

Quickly the keen nose of the tiny Ninken picked up the direction that they were to head, East by South-East, and Yukari was willing to let the puppy lead the way. After all, it was unlikely he couldn't find the place. “You've got a great nose! That'd be the right one, Ame. Lead the way?” She asked him out loud, thinking that perhaps the pup would enjoy taking charge of the path. Dogs, as far as she understood, seemed to enjoy having something useful to do.

Looking over at Faulkner she grinned and shook her head negative as he asked. “Not at all, I've only ever really been sick one time in my whole life that I know of – and it wasn't from a ride – so I'm sure I'll be fine. I've never been sick on a ride before, for sure.” Wrinkling her nose at the though of both the misery of vomiting and the humiliation it would bring to do so in front of the guy who was with her. That would just be the worst! "I really enjoy rides, but I don't get to go often. I like feeling like I'm flying. If I close my eyes I can pretend that I am." She wouldn't mention that sometimes she imagined she was a ninja, jumping with ease through the towering trees or across rooftops.

As they began to move forward she pondered the differences in their forms. He was a good bit taller than her, and though she assumed both of them still had growing to do it was unlikely she'd ever close the gap. Both of them were lean, though he carried far more muscle than she. He walked with far more assurance than she did as well, though whether that was a gender difference or a shinobi/civilian difference she wasn't sure. Perhaps, it was both? She wondered, idly, if she seemed as small and delicate to him as she felt. It was nice, feeling safe like this.
