Reo was enjoying his trek through the mountains of his country. One might think he'd had his fill of wilderness walking during his multi-year walkabout, yet one who thought thusly would be wrong. He hadn't returned to his village out of loneliness or a craving for the comforts of civilization, but rather out of an inspired sense of duty that had grown during his time away. He'd found that the hustle and bustle of life in the hidden village was draining. Now, on a mission and alone in nature, both his higher purpose and his personal preferences were in line. Life was good.

He had been cutting across cross country for the most part, sometimes taking a small path or meandering creek bed as he saw fit. He figured the bandits he was interested in would have scouts throughout the region. The chance of encountering one of this scouts increased as he got closer to his final destination. When he got close enough, he'd fade away entirely so as to take them by surprise. It might have been prudent to make the whole journey disembodied, yet he could not bring himself to abandon the beauty around him. It just wasn't the same experiencing it as pure consciousness.

The Iwa jounin continued his trek through the mountains, intent upon his destination. He kept his sense alert, but aside from a group of merchants traveling down on the main road he had yet to encounter any humans. Hawks soared overhead in the morning light, searching for a meal, and on frequently he would see various lizards scampering away from his stealthy approach.

He followed the directions given to him in the envelope. Ah yes, the mysterious envelope. It had contained relevant details of the rapid confession spewed forth by the bridge bandit captive he had delivered. That group was merely a cell of a larger bandit organization, and he was being assigned to look into the matter further. He had a rough map with relevant landmarks that should get him in the viscinity and it would be up to his shinobi training to do the rest.

This mission had two parts: first of all, he was to gather what information he could regarding the bandits' operation. Ideally, he would capture the leader or at least someone higher up. Second, he was to destroy the camp - hopefully by doing so the remaining cells which were assumed to exist would simply flounder.

His reflections on the task at hand were interrupted as he sensed the presence of two chakra signatures up ahead. Aggression intent oozed his direction.

Reo stopped as soon as he sensed the chakra signatures ahead. He quietly tip toed off the small track he’d been following. He crept ahead, and soon saw them. They were just below him over the edge of a 3 meter drop, overlooking the main road below.

Reo overheard them discussing a shipment of raw ore coming this way that was expected later on in the day. It was very clear that they were going to raid the caravan and kill the merchants, porters, and anyone else in order to get the cargo. How they would transport it was unclear to Reo but he thought maybe allies would come help move it or perhaps they could summon something to help.

Preparing himself to strike, Reo silently dropped from the ledge. His fist struck the base of one of the bandits necks and he felt a sickening snap as the obese fighter slumped to the ground in a heap. Landing in a crouch Reo sprung towards the remaining bandit but was not fast enough. The bandit took an inhuman leap away from Reo, bit his thumb, and proceeded to perform the summoning technique. A large ox like creature appeared before them, at least 3 meters high at the shoulder with a massive spread of horns. It was bright red and sweaty with beady little eyes. It stared at Reo.

Reo swore under his breath, which was really far and away the best place to swear. That red bull looked pissed. It was stamping the ground - just brimming with energy - and then he noticed it had goddamn wings. The bull charged at him. He dove to the side and rolled... the sharp left horn missing his coat by mere inches. As he came up was already forming the appropriate hand signs. He felt the power of his blood line, the almighty dust release, congeal geometrically between his palms. He let loose and the front half the the bull was no more. Fizzy yellow blood flooded the dry rocky ground for a few moment before the remains vanished in a puff of smoke.

Reo turned his attention to the summoner who was now looking truly terrified - eyes wide, quivering lip - the whole works. A pair of clumsily thrown kunai sailed high and to the left; they were of no concern. Reo began summoning his technique once again, the thrum of power growing louder, when the remaining bandit threw himself down and surrendered. Reo let the technique fade.

The Iwa Jounin conducted an impromptu field interrogation, and learned quite a lot about the details of the camp. It moved regularly. The bandit didn't know where it was right now, but he did know where it would be soon. Reo marched him back to the nearest settlement and turned him in. Then he had some time to kill before he could complete his mission. Perhaps he would catch the end of the cherry blossom festival. He faded to nothing, and his consciousness took flight straight as the bird flies.

Reo returned from the cherry blossom festival after a long journey. He'd spent much of it incorporeal, and returned to his body just to rest up before the assault tonight. He peered down over the edge of the cliff to the bandit entrance below. His intel had led him to this cave. It was tucked back in a zig zag of natural crevices and if he hadn't had good directions he likely would never have found it. Yet here he was. He noticed a pair of sentries standing guard. He used his sensing technique, and noted that no one else was nearby, except for far deeper in the cave, where the disparate signatures indicated that there were numerous rooms and branching tunnels. He really needed to come up with some sort of earth xray sensing technique, but that was a task for another day. Right now he had to make due with what he had. It was time for the classics. He'd always been fond of hiding like a mole jutsu, and here was the perfect chance to use it.

Reo vanished into the rock, only to pop up directly behind the first sentry - a bulky man- and land an incapacitating chop to the neck. The sentry dropped unconscious and Reo popped up behind the other to repeat the move. Clean and quiet - undetected... just the way Reo like it. He then vanished, preferring to take those inside unawares.

As a disembodied consciousness, Reo drifted down the open tunnel and through the heavy wooden door. He had no body to be stopped. On the other side the tunnel continued for about 20 meters, then opened up into a larger central cavern of a room, big enough to fit a small house in. He noticed a few side tunnels branching off. There were five bandits playing some sort of dice game around a table. The were drinking something that, judging by their behavior, must have been strongly alcoholic. Moon shine or something, thought Reo. He scouted down the left most tunnel. There were two locked doors that he passed through, and then a medium sized room with wooden bars and a locked door. On the other side were half a dozen people, mainly women, unwashed, dirty, and skinny. Slaves? Captives? It didn't matter. It pissed Reo off. At least they'd be safe in their cage while he took care of their captors. The tunnel on the other side of the main room went to a bunk room. There were 4 bandits sleeping in greasy blankets. He thought he'd start here. But first Reo needed to see what was down the central tunnel.

A quick backtrack and then down the central tunnel, there was a small section that then opened up through a doorway into what looked like an office. Stalagtites and cave pools mixed with fine carpets and elaborately carved furniture. These guys may be assholes, but Reo like the style of their leader at least. It spoke to his earth elemental affinity. At the far end, behind the grand desk, was a smaller door. Reo proceeded through it and saw the leader sleeping in bed. Well this would be easy, he thought.

Reo rematerialized at the head of the leaders bed, and slipped him into a choke hold. There was some brief thrashing and then the leader was unconscious. Reo checked him for vitals and was pleased to see he was still alive. The Iwa Jounin took a minute to thoroughly restrain him, and then vanished. He returned to the room of the sleeping bandits. Here he was not so careful. These were terrorists and murderers, and he had been charged to deal with them. One by one, he muffled he covered their faces and slit their throats. Quiet. Perfect. In some corner of his mind he was disgusted by what he was doing, but he couldn't afford the luxury of guilt. He had to be hard like stone.

With the back room bandits and leader incapacitated, through loss of life or otherwise, Reo proceeded to the main room. He cracked the door and peered out from the tunnel leading to the bunk room. The 4 bandits were all gathered around a small table. It appeared they were still drinking and gambling. He silently formed the required hand seals, and an instant later, a forest of sharp stone spikes penetrated the group every which way. There was some screaming, but it was thankfully brief. There was spatter, and blood was pooling in that part of the room. Reo was a bit disturbed with how easy this all was.

His thoughts turned to the prisoners in the back, and how malnourished, how abused they appeared. That made it easier. Abstract concepts like impediment of foreign trade made difficult justification for murder - and Reo had no doubt that what he had just done, what all shinobi did periodically in their careers - was murder. Put a face on the victim though, and such objections faded to a whisper. Fishing the keys off the belt of one of the four, this one still moaning and twitching, Reo proceeded down the hallway to the prisoner's cell. Murder left a bad taste in his mouth. It was time to be someone's hero.

The captives were just as shocked and excited as one might expect. Reo didn't ask what had happened to them. It was all too obvious just how poorly they'd been treated and he didn't need to be haunted by the details of their abuse. He had those in better shape go through the bandit's belongings and lay out everything of use. He helped divvy it up - such loot being of no use to him. In the end, each got a pack, fresher clothes with a spare outfit, a water pouch, blanket, and some sort of weapon. These weren't fighters and he didn't want to be responsible for them hurting themselves, so for the most part the weapons were limited to daggers, though one girl seemed confident enough with a bow. That handled, he turned them loose on the bandits larder.

He himself went back to the leaders room. He didn't want to hear anything from the man, if he regained consciousness, so he tore some cloth and applied a gag. Much better. There wasn't much in the way of loot in the chest, just some small amount of coins. He had a house, a job, food and clothes... as well as the ability to get more. He decided to divy this up amongst the captives as well.

Once everyone was equipped, Reo threw some water on the face of the leader, whom he ha securely bound in a multitude of ways. They filed out single file with Reo in the lead followed by his captive, on a lead, and then the prisoners. They made slow time. The prisoners were weakened due to their abuse and lack of food. Yet, they were motivated by the prospect of freedom. Some still had family and friends they felt they could rely on, and those who didn't were being taken in by those who did. Reo thought that that was rather touching.

Eventually, they got to the village. Reo made sure the captives were set up in a local inn for the night, and left the captive with the local law enforcement for safe keeping. He did not fancy dragging the bound bandit leader all the way back to Iwagakure. No, he figured, they would be happy to send someone to collect him and transport him properly. Reo was curious what the interrogation might reveal. He'd had the impression that several other satellite cells were reporting to this leader. Perhaps he would be tasked with tracking them down if they good intel. Or, perhaps that duty would fall on someone else. Time would tell. Once everyone was secured away with the appropriate amount of freedom, Reo himself began walking out of town. Eventually he cut off the road, behind some rocks, and when he was sure no one could see him, he faded away to nothing.
