Mangetsu Shingen
It was cold here, but then again, Shingen assumed that that was always probably the case, even when it wasn't snowing. And it was snowing, quite heavily in fact. The air was filled with white flakes drifting down form on high, making a rather picturesque scene. The snowfall had begun even before the pair had crossed the border into this country, but it had only grown more intense ever since. It wasn't a storm, exactly. It certainly wasn't an unpleasant snow. There was no howling wind that whipped it into a fury. Instead, heavy snowflakes fell lazily and scenically, as if right out of a painting. It was this snow, in fact, that was the reason that Shingen had chosen to come here with Rei. Snow was, in fact, a common interest for the two of them. For his own sake, it was a rare phenomenon that he loved, coming originally from a land of deserts. It was also sentimental, as it was in snow that he had met the woman beside him for the first time.

The snow crunched underfoot, a few inches having steadily accumulated. The sky was dark, the heavy snowclouds above hidden by the night sky, and hiding in turn the great moon beyond. The landscape wasn't dark, however. Twinkling lanterns illuminated the path towards the little holiday village up ahead. The destination of the lovers' retreat, a few days respite from the worries of the rest of the world. Shingen had insisted such, and was happy enough that Rei had agreed. Such an event was an intersect of several special occasions, anyway, so it would have been notably hard for Rei to refuse, anyway. It was a bit late, but it was a chance for the two of them to celebrate the winter festival, which they had missed on their missions. While it was not a winter festival being celebrated at this little village in the Land of Snow, it was perhaps something more fitting. It was a Valentine's celebration, an imported festival of romance, chocolates, and love. A second compelling reason for a little vacation.

It was also, by happenstance, close to the couple's two year anniversary of being married, something that they could also celebrated during their time together. Shinobi life was a busy and dangerous one, and as a result holidays frequently got shoved together like this, celebrated in batches at convenience, rather than on their designated days. Most importantly, however, Shingen wanted to celebrate a pseudo-honeymoon. Shikaji and Junko had one, and certainly they were both Shingen and Rei now, but it felt a little incomplete. Neither of them were fully themselves at the time, and now that they were both whole, Shingen wanted to celebrate that fact in earnest. A little sappy, perhaps, but such a honeymoon between Shingen and Rei had been something that a more youthful blonde had daydreamed about more than once, and now it was something that a taller, older brunette would get to enjoy.

His hand shifted slightly, moving to entwine with some of Rei's slender fingers. He didn't feel too cold, though he was also wearing a winter jacket in place of his armor overtop of his usual garb. His brown eyes darted over to her, and he smiled. "Anniversary, winter festival, Valentines, honeymoon," he listed off the occasions, stroking the back of Rei's hand softly with his thumb. "There's so much to celebrate, I almost forgot, we missed your birthday, too."

There was something about the snow that made everything seem quieter, a little darker, a little more gentle. It was that part of the dark she'd overlooked for so long in her quest for the sun, for light - how peaceful it seemed, how calming it could be. Though she hadn't really wanted to, thinking it a bit irresponsible to run off elsewhere while her promises lingered and twisted in the wind, certain to need her, she had agreed when Shingen had presented the idea. She had to look upon their relationship, too, as something of an obligation - not in the way that one worked because they had to, but just that she had to hold it to the same level of importance as her other interactions. She knew that she tended to put personal connections on the back burner when it came to completing goals. Rei couldn't do that this time.

Thoughts interrupted when fingers brushed against her own, and slipped in to hold her hand. She glanced to him, wishing she hadn't ruined her sweater in Kiri, wanting to blend in with the snow with the fuzzy white top. Instead, she wore a red long sleeve, skirt, and warm stockings. The cold didn't generally bother her. "Honeymoon? I distinctly remember having one of those," she replied, raising an eyebrow.

Approaching the twinkling lights of the little festival one footstep at a time, movement highlighted by the light crunching of snow underfoot, Shingen let his brown gaze flick over to look at the raven-haired girl at his side. "I remember too," he replied mellifluously, a smile on his face. "That was the first time we tried anal," he quipped, the words spilling from his mouth like some kind of impulsive blurb, as if he hadn't thought about what he was saying. In truth, it was more calculated than that, a teasing little jab at her, planned out well in advance of actually being used. Letting out a deep breath, eyes wandering over to look at the trail of frost that left his mouth, Shingen laughed softly before speaking again. "I know, I know, we had one," he admitted. "But still, that was for Shikaji and Junko. They're still a part of us now, but they weren't all of us. I just figured it'd be good to do something now that we were both whole again," he said, explaining his motivations as the two of them came to the edge of the town, eyes falling upon the moving forms of various other festival-goers, the sound of games and the smell of food assaulting his senses. "I wonder if anyone will recognize us."

Her brow remained arched in the wake of his answer. Of course she remembered that, had remembered feeling vulnerable and helpless, with a lack of responsibility or need for forethought. It was nice in its own way, and in truth she had enjoyed the physicality of their union as much as she had the mental and emotional dynamic. She sort of wished that she could return to it, briefly, though Rei knew better than to believe she could. "It's fine," she admitted, willing away the heat in her cheeks. "We're here. It can be every kind of holiday you want, though I think before honeymoon we should probably call it 'third date'," she scoffed, adjusting her bag over one shoulder as they moved together toward the little town and its seemingly happy population. It reminded her of their very first date. "I don't know. I hope not. I just want to enjoy myself."

The brown-haired man nodded in agreement, switching his gaze from Rei's face to the little village. "Third date, huh?" He mused with a laugh. "Our relationship must be moving pretty fast then, Oku-san," he teased, glancing down at her again, as if subtly implying all the things that they had done. Walking into the village proper, Shingen's blue eyes glanced around at the people, wondering if they would be noticed. Fortunately, it did not seem as if that was the case, at least. Either the village was too small, too isolated from shinobi life to have heard of them, or, more likely, it was simply because of that isolation that anyone who saw them must have believed themselves mistaken; there was no way or reason for two famous and terrifying missing-nin to be in some small village in the Land of Snow. Seeing this, at least, Shingen relaxed a little bit, letting out a long breath, the hot air turning to mist as it left his lips.

Smiling, Shingen made his way over towards the first stand by the street, tugging Rei softly behind him, catching the attention of the vendor operating it. The smell of cooked meats and vegetables was strong here, along with the scent of soy sauce, the stand easily identifiable as a fair classic; meat on a stick. "Do you want chicken, or?" He asked, glancing down at Rei, memory recalling what they had ordered at the little fair in Kumo, on what would have been their first date.

Following the trail toward the incandescent glow of the village, Rei was glad this path was a little more well-traveled than the one they'd taken on their first date. It was clear of snow, which made the going much easier as they moved in. Shingen took one last attempt at causing the Uchiha to blush, but she instead glanced up at him with skeptically raised eyebrows. "Most wives would be rather complaintive of being taken on only three dates in the time we've been together, you know. I'm being kind and understanding, so take advantage of it," she replied, following as he pulled her forward impatiently by the hand. The ninja could easily keep up while keeping her balance, and so they moved together to the little stand. The smell of roasting meat and the sweet sauce that it was slathered in before being handed out to tourist and local alike wafted to her, and even Rei's mouth watered at the offering. It was cheap, and certainly not healthy, but there was always something about such treats that made them so enticing.

"Chicken's fine," she replied, looking more at Shingen than at the vendor. It was subtle, but she could tell he wanted to order for her. She didn't mind, really, glancing back out at the other festival-goers and thinking that this place was much more populous than the previous one they'd attended. It made the place seem a bit more celebratory. She liked it.

"Yes, yes, you're truly the most sagacious and forgiving wife," he teased in reply, voice heavy with a sarcasm that implied she were otherwise, even though he knew that the words that he spoke were very much true. The two of them had been through a lot, and to call Rei anything less than forgiving would have been an immense understatement. Maybe, he thought, she wasn't this way for everyone. But when it came to him at least, she seemed almost indulgent. This trip could have served as the best possible example of such. As they approached the food vendor, Shingen fished around in his pocket for a few spare coins with which to pay for their food. Holding up one hand, two fingers extended, Shingen indicated their order before clarifying vocally. "One chicken and one tofu, please," he requested, eventually seizing the coins with his other hand and pulling them from his pocket, handing them over to the elderly man with a soft smile as he returned both his hands to his side. "Keep the change," he offered, receiving a jovial smile from the man in return, who produced two skewers, one containing marinated chicken, and the other tofu.

Taking them with a few words of thanks, Shingen held his in his left hand and extended the other to his wife, taking a bite and chewing for a few moments, savoring the flavor. It wasn't the best thing in the world, that was certain, but it was good, and Shingen tended to have a certain fondness for food like this, so he made a humming noise of approval. "It's good." Looking around as he relinked his free hand with Rei's, he observed the festival around them. A few games where you could win prizes, a few other food stands selling different exotic foods, even a photo-booth set up underneath a tent to keep it out of the snow. Further down the main street was the hotel at which Shingen had rented the two of them a room.

"See anything you want to do first?" He asked, before nodding his head down towards the end of the street. "That's our hotel down there."

Eyelids lowered slightly in pleasure, happy that Shingen was such an easy jester. She wasn't sure she would be able to get along with someone who wasn't, really. She was serious enough, and her humor was often dry. The chicken handed to her after he handed over the price with a rather generous tip, she let her teeth pluck at the little wooden spear, pulling away a piece of the meat. Her husband seemed pleased with his tofu; they must have seared it to keep it from wiggling too much on the stick. That likely meant a bit of the char included both chicken and beef, in extremely small part, or - no. They fried it. She smiled a bit, glad she didn't have to make the decision of causing him grief with the truth or allowing him a happy ignorance. "It is," she agreed, smiling a bit wider. Another moment, and his hand found hers. She allowed it, feeling not as on her guard as usual. Though her hands were occupied, she didn't mind. "I... well. I feel like the games are a poor challenge, but if they have a prize we might want, we could pretend to nearly lose. That could be fun," she stated, a little laugh leaving her lips. The hotel could wait. Even if they didn't find something nice to win, she wanted to walk around and enjoy the peace.

Grinning as he bit into his tofu and listened to Rei talk, Shingen examined the selection of games that the little festival offered. There was a ring toss, a rhythm dancing game that must have been imported, some little shooting games, a few ball games and other games that mixed skill with chance. "I'll have you know that I don't need to pretend in order to lose," he teased with a boisterous laugh. He felt particularly energetic today, and why shouldn't he? Today had all of the makings of a particularly exceptional day, and he was keen as he always was to enjoy such a thing. It was a mental reprieve from the troubles and hardships that had followed the couple so far, and when they left this place he was sure that there would be many more to come, but here they were isolated and away from all of that. "Would you prefer a giant teddy bear, or perhaps another bracelet?" He asked, examining some of the prize walls that the different games offered with a cursory glance.

The woman shrugged noncommittally, her eyes drifting over the prizes. The stuffed bears looked soft and of a design that she did not normally see in the Land of Fire, a white and black pattern and large enough to happily wrap both arms around and squeeze only slightly. Other prizes were more simple and needed fewer or less complete victories, trinkets and decorations or sometimes little candies. The skewer in her hand lifted to her mouth again, and Rei delicately used her teeth to pull meat up the length of the stick and off of it, chewing once more. "It's not about losing, it's about nearly losing, giving up all of your extra chances on purpose - making it difficult to find victory," she replied after finishing the bite, her eyes now sliding their gaze to Shingen. "If you lose, then, or if you find your winning still too easy, then you've actually lost the game. As far as what kind of prize I want..." she mused, tilting her head and looking back over the various hanging bears and baubles, "... I don't honestly know. Surprise me."

Wondering for a moment what might be the best thing to surprise Rei with, Shingen eventually made a decision in the back of his mind and led himself and his wife over towards one of the game stands. Finishing off the bit of tofu on his skewer, he tossed the empty bit of wood into a nearby trashcan and fished around in his pocket again for a bit more change to pay for the game with. It was a game that the two of them could play, a rhythm dancing game, similar to the ones they had played on dates before, with two platforms for two different players. The brunette turned and grinned to his wife, a slight tilt of his head to the side to inquire if she was willing to play. For those who hit excellent or perfect scores, there was a whole array of fanciful prizes that they could choose from. "Think you've still got what it takes?" He teased.

The dark-haired girl hadn't meant to do it, but she'd ended up hoping he would choose her favorite. She hadn't thought she really wanted to do a specific game or win a specific prize, but if she were going to participate, the pair of somewhat older machines with flashing lights and a solid platform with worn arrows appealed to her most. Rei sighed, her shoulders lifting and then falling, remembering the last time she'd been on one of these things. She'd been a successful ninja employed in Konohagakure, someone of power and ability and means. She hadn't meant to be as welcoming as she'd been for Shingen, then. Now, it was expected. "More now than ever," she replied, shrugging, her smile continued. "Unless the game is to let you win..." she continued, eyebrows raising.

Rei replied in the affirmative, as Shingen expected she was likely to do, but he himself was always up for the challenge, even if he knew he was fighting at a disadvantage. Still, that didn't mean he was going to let that fact show, as he kept a confident grin on his face as he hopped up onto the platform that was split into two sets of arrows, turning around to offer his hand out to Rei to help her onto the platform as well, even if she certainly didn't need it. "Bold of you to assume you'll win," he teased, eventually moving to one of the two sets of arrows once he had finished helping Rei up, should she have chosen to accept his help in the first place. He looked at the song selection screen and pursued their selection for a moment, though he ultimately left the choice of, at least the first song, up to Rei. "I'll have you know I've engaged in special training for just this moment," he stated matter-of-factly, shaking his arms at his sides and bouncing a few times on his feet as if loosening up before some great measure of physical exercise, equating the dance-off to what others might have considered a race. He turned his head to each side, popping his neck before lacing his hands together and cracking his knuckles. "Loser has to buy drinks after," he challenged, as he usually might have, feeling in good spirits today.

The girl noted the apparent confidence that Shingen displayed, watching as he jumped to the arrows on the side he preferred. His hand gestured out toward her, open and inviting. Rei took it, but didn't really need it for the single step up - it wasn't even a high step. Still, she clasped hands with him, keeping hold for longer than necessary as she settled into place and looked at the selection. The entire thing was covered by a tarp set up on poles like an awning - likely to keep snow from settling on the machine. Raiton-based network was difficult enough to get out here, and it was likely that whoever ran the booth paid a lot for a portable, rechargeable system. It was unlikely that he wanted the weather to ruin it. Still, it allowed the man to charge a lot more for his product than others did for theirs. It had already paid for itself, no doubt, but getting another would be a different problem, entirely. "I can only win or tie," she replied, raising an eyebrow. As before, the Uchiha set her heel on the little bar that ran across the back of the platform, leaning down in an easy stretch. "You need special training just to keep up." She repeated the stretch with her other leg, stocking pulling down her thigh just a little and needing to be pulled back up, skirt lifted slightly before she was able to fully right her outfit and turn back toward the song selection.

Leaning her weight onto the arrow that made the screen in front of her display a new song, she pondered. Shingen had been a little more constant, of late. That was good, but she wasn't certain of it. How long would they have before he found another batch of memories, or some different feeling, or...? I shouldn't think like that, she told herself, selecting a song. It wasn't the most difficult, and in fact she knew they could both pass it perfectly if they both tried, but it was a song she wanted to listen to, and could actually dance to as well. "Do your best," she stated with a rare smirk, and while most times such a cheer might be seen as encouraging, somehow, from Rei, it sounded like a warning.

Watching Rei browse through the songs, Shingen smiled, a softer smile than his usual grand ones. It was almost picturesque, but strange in its own way, watching Rei do something so mundane, something that might almost have been considered normal. And unlike last time, it was no act, no charade of a game played for a single night, but a glimpse at something purer, something truer. He had died for this woman, in the most literal of senses, but felt so privileged now to stand at her side like he was. She issued her challenge with a smirk, and Shingen met it with a wide grin. "I always do," he challenged, moving onto his own set of arrows as the song moved to begin. It wasn't a song that Shingen had heard before, but it was certainly pleasant, and as the music began to wind up he found himself moving through it relatively easily, at least at the beginning, sliding forward and back, side to side as he hit each of the arrows with an easy rhythm. A series of perfects and the start of a combo flashed across the screen as he shifted. His moves were less a dance and more a series of steps when they did this many years ago; he was fast enough to mash each button, but he didn't exactly make the process seem graceful. Here, however, he tried better, worked harder. His movements possessed a certain grace that he had lacked last time. Instead of just stomping on the pads, he was actually dancing to the rhythm, hitting the beats and notes and even moving to predict the patterns and the arrows before they even began to glow. Casting his gaze over to see how his wife fared, he expected something magnificent.

The music built up slowly, and the choreography flashed across the screen as the pair began to move. It was easy enough to simply catch a glimpse of what was coming next, not really needing to glue her eyes to the screen nor to do much other than bounce, twirl, and gently touch each of the pads as the arrows lined up, the announcement on the screen of "Perfect!" coming up every single time. Mentally, Rei simply slipped away, synchronizing her body and mind and letting both be guided by the music and an occasional glance at the screen, just as a little reminder. The movement warmed her body in the cold air of the Land of Snow, radiating the air around the little setup while they played. It was easy, casual, but no less a display of magnificent elegance and finesse - the look he gave was worth the time spared for it.
