Mission deets:
Mission Name: In the Jungle, the Mountain Jungle!?*
Requester: Kumogakure Animal Control
Rank: C
Description: There’s a strange set of Mountain Lion attacks in the Jade Dragon recently. There have been some rather reports of travelers getting attacked and mauled by these mighty beasts. They don't possess chakra but they are still dangerous. Be careful and try to put them in their place!
Members Needed: 1-3 Genin, 1 Chuunin+
Requirements: 300+ words per post minimum
Reward: 30,000 Ryo
After resting up for a few days Hayate grabbed the first mission he could find and headed out to the meeting point. His last fight with the twins showed him just how much he still needed to train, though he was able to finally obtain a level mastery of his curse seal. Hardly even a foothold, but anything less than the belligerent state it put me in at first is a blessing. The fact that his seal would fully paralyze him after use worried him with its usefulness in a real fight. Losing consciousness is as good as dying when real enemies are present, I need to get ahold of this quicker, it's taking too long! While he could rely on his raw strength and speed the amount of chakra that the seal demanded from him was a constant handicap that was a good reminder of his need to keep training.

It was a blustery day, the howling wind whipped his clothing around constantly but he pressed forward hoping that he wouldn't be venturing on this mission. Days like these he could count of his feathery friend Chikaze to be flying high in the sky with his brethren in a test of endurance, flapping those large wings was truly a workout in this wind. Reaching the first peak he took a break, waiting for anyone else who might have picked up the mission alongside him. It was rare that the man had an opportunity to simply admire the landscape, luckily he'd griped about his lack of control over the seal on the way up and putting his mind at greater ease. It almost felt like the entire Land of Lightning could be seen from up here, if not for the clouds that refused to leave the skies. He wanted dearly to call his friend and fly in the skies along with him, but he couldn't rob Chikaze of quality time with his clan.

"Bah." Barked the scientist. It was beneath him by such an obscene amount that eve thinking about it was below him. If it weren't for the particular "who" that had decided to take this "mission" than the man wouldn't have even considered leaving the lab. Hayate had been a much better specimen than the Jashin boyl, as sad as that was to admit. Even now the boy was left back in the operating room, seemingly comatose. His body had reacted poorly to both of Mayuri's gifts, his body was seemingly only durable because of his god's will and not his own. A pity, and a waste, but onward and upward. His second specimen had taken to the seal like pike to the grill. That is to say deliciously and exactly as it should be. That did little to ease his aggravation but it did something at least.

Hands buried in his long sleeves, the man walked with an obvious grimace. Even his steps sounded with his disinterest in something as mundane as a mountain lion. A beast meant little to the man, as much as a tree cared about a single ant. He had predicted Hayate's route up the mountain and as the younger Jounin came to a halt, Mayuri walked out from ahead of him.

"I see you finally decided to show up. I'm here to do some research on this wildlife problem we have. Lucky for me, you're here too. I do love stoning two birds, don't you Hayate?" He tiled his head to a usual dangerous degree, almost too far for a neck to stretch before he snapped it back to a normal position. Approaching the younger Jounin, Mayuri bobbed his head back and forth, looking the man over from head to toe. He smiled that lipless smile, that all teeth smile, and clapped his hands. "My, my! I see you're beginning to learn to use my gift. This is good news, truly! How do you feel?"

To his surprise, Hayate heard the voice of Mayuri come out from in front of him as the man revealed himself. What the... How long had he been waiting here? Thinking that the man hardly ever left his lab he assumed there was only one reason he could be out here. Me. He simply nodded as a greeting before being asked how he had felt after all this time with the curse seal. Even now it tickled, though perhaps that was to do with being so close to its creator. There was a certainly a pull on his conscious towards Mayuri when around him that hadn't been present before, though Hayate hadn't really paid it any mind with how useful he was. It had been several months since having it branded onto his back, with limited success in bringing out its true power. It frustrated the man to no end, but his stubborn attitude wasn't one that would give up so easily. Instinctually bringing his hand to scratch the mark he answered with a limited amount of confidence.

"I've been able to pull a small amount more power out of the seal, but it still is too debilitating to use in any real fight." He silently fumed on the matter for a few seconds before elaborating on his being here. "Hence why I'm out grabbing lowly missions like this one. I need all the experience I can get at home before being sent away out of the country." Hayate then began to walk, continuing down the path towards the last known spotting of the hunted mountain lions. "And how is your friend, back at the lab still? The boy looked pretty terrible last I saw." In truth he had his own desires to meet back up with that child, prodding for information would make it infinitely easier for him.

Folding his arms, Mayuri clicked his tongue after Hayate's initial response. It had been some time since the implementation of the seal and to hear that the man had only made a small amount of progress wasn't exactly what he wanted to hear. There was no time limit on his experiment, but the man wasn't what could be called a beacon of patience. "Progress is progress I suppose." he said as he began pacing back and forth. "You handled the seal well during the initial process, I'm sure you'll gain control of it in no time. Until then feel free to tinker with it more." His lips pulled back into that all-teeth grin once more, "If anything bad happens I'll just fix you back up like it was nothing."

His interest was further piqued as Hayate mentioned being sent out of the country. There had been a certain sensation in the air. The man's blood had been prickling as of late, a feeling he had seldom experienced in his life. That last instance had been just before the war broke out. Perhaps Hayate would be leaving the country soon, and, as he said, having mastery of the seal was certainly a boon he would want during said travels. His subject began to move further down the trail, breaking Mayuri's pacing. He stared at the ground for a moment, as if analyzing the small prints his feet had left in the dirt, before following after.

"Oh, that one?" Mayuri answered with an entirely disinterested tone. "Someone broke into my lab, dropped off his unconscious body and then left. They even had the audacity to come during lunch. It was really all too stressful for me." He caught up to Hayate at this point and rolled his hands as he spoke. "Upon waking up that little brat threatened me, if only in a tongue in cheek kind of way. Needless to say he's still in the lab. His body didn't hold up nearly as well as yours. It's a shame, he had so much promise." He chuckled, shrugged, and that was that on the subject.

Clearly, the progress report Hayate gave wasn’t ideal as Mayuri prompted him to play with the seal more often. Perhaps that was the trick, it could be that having used it sparingly he’d stunted his growth with it. Hmmm, I’ll have to keep that in mind. Apparently, if he lost control with it the man felt confident in his ability to patch him up which was reassuring as long as he didn’t end up like that undying boy. It turned out that he was left crippled in the lab, taking far less to the seal than Hayate had been fortunate enough with. The news of the boy’s location was a struck of luck, though it wasn’t quite the place to be sneaking around unnoticed for what he had planned. “In the lab...” Without thinking he said his thoughts aloud, quickly silencing himself before he said too much. Good, good. So the boy’s still alive.

Pushing those thoughts out for later mulling over Hayate focused on the task at hand, stepping off the path and stopping before flipping through a set of hand seals. Snake, Monkey, Rat, Monkey, Bird. After the last seal, he brought his left hand up to his eye and pressed an extended index and middle finger against the eyelid. Iron particles began to swirl out from the sleek gourd under his cloak and form an eyeball right in front of him before sending it flying into the sky. Now with his vision extended he walked back onto the path and continued walking. “Shouldn’t take long now, as soon as I’ve located the beasts we can be done with them and head back.” While always the dutiful soldier, it did bother Hayate to have such high ranking officers as themselves out here mopping up this trash. He wanted to be done with distractions like this so the two could prepare for the upcoming conflict more. After a few minutes of searching his eye picked up a trail and he motioned for Mayuri to follow him off the path. “Tracks.”

The pair of entirely over-qualified shinobi walked through the woods to deal with a simple, meaningless, mountain lion. There was a war going on and two of the highest ranking shinobi in the village were off dealing with a cat. The sheer ridiculousness of it wasn't lost on the man, but the feline menace wasn't his main goal on this mission. The man beside him was, and so far the mission was going quite well. His eyes snapped toward Hayate when the man let slip a few simple words. Those words were enough for Mayuri however and he was no slouch when it came to pressing the matter. As Hayate worked toward finding the tracks, Mayuri worked on making his way in front of his specimen. His pace was barely increased, only enough that when he had finally broke out in front it would be noticed. He smiled as he turned to face his "partner" on the mission. "You seem to have an interest in the boy. I can't blame you, he is an exquisite specimen. You should see his blood under a microscope sometime, but I have to wonder, Hayate. What is it that you find interesting about him, hmm?"

Did the Magnet user know about the boy's ties to Jashin? If that was the case he was almost assuredly barking up the wrong tree. Slyther had made it shamefully clear that there would be no chance of him showing Mayuri to his "god". Would he really show Hayate over himself? That would be an insult to the greatest degree and an idea he refused to even entertain. No, there had to be something else that the man in front of him wanted. Slowly, the idea that his experiment could be more began to creep in the scientist's mind. Perhaps he could be a disciple? That would need more consideration.

No matter how quick Hayate had tried to cover his tracks after muttering the single thought aloud it was no use as the quick-witted scientist picked up on his interest immediately. The man hadn’t yet figured out the specifics of Hayate’s interest, but he knew it would only be a matter of time before it was deduced. Perhaps this mission would provide more useful information than some just some field use of his Curse Seal, the two men certainly had a lot in common in terms of their thirst for power. Not sure how direct he wanted to be Hayate uncharacteristically danced around his true point of interest as best he could.

“A simple curiosity.” Hayate paused after the statement, spending a few seconds to focus on searching for their cat with his floating eye before continuing on. “I heard the boy was decapitated in some training mishap, yet he still clung to life. Such a fantastic specimen, I wonder though if he could even live without his vital organs. Perhaps I could be of some company at your lab after this mission, that boy is anything but uninteresting.” Not exactly dancing around the topic Hayate stopped himself from indulging more, it was strange how loose he found his tongue ran when around this man. He certainly had a charismatic pull this Mayuri, the more Hayate saw this man the more he wanted to be around him, the closer he needed to be to him. With the upcoming conflict, he hoped the two could work together in some capacity.

As the two continued on they made their way to the tracks his sand eye had found, following the large prints in the earth they came closer and closer to the end of the mission. Once they reached the footprints Hayate stopped an kneeled down for a moment, noting just how large the animal had to be to leave such huge tracks. “Looks like this beast might be a bit more fun than we anticipated.” He gave a wink with one free eye before continuing on, hoping that they were nearing their den soon so they could be done with it all.

Mayuri's smile dropped. A part of him was furious that information like that had gotten out so easily. While it didn't out the boy's religion it certainly did place an unwanted amount of attention on the Jashinist. Slyther was a curious one, and thus far there had been no deducible reason why Jashin had chosen him. His body was frail and his demeanor was anything but zealous. Quite the contrary, the boy seemed half-asleep most of the time. That hardly seemed like a prophet for a god and yet there was no denying the ritual that the boy had done and the gift he had gotten in return.

Hayate's interest in the boy wasn't surprising, but wanting to know if he could live without internal organs? Now that was an interesting question. The blood tests indicated that it was entirely plausible if not simply the case. The boy's cells refused to die despite no longer being a part of him. Other than his digestive tract, Mayuri assumed any of his organs could go missing and he would be none the wiser. "Ah so you heard of that? Yes it wasn't easy stitching him back together but alas I did it perfectly." It was a blatant lie but the scientist sold it as if he were explaining that the sky is, in fact, blue. The longer Hayate was ignorant to Slyther's religion the better. After all, he still had to figure out how it worked. There weren't many things in the world that stumped him, and how he relished those few things that did.

His companion's eye caught the tracks of the beast they were after. Hayate noted that things might be a little more interesting than simply finding a mountain lion. Mayuri snapped his neck into that dangerously tilted position, "Fun? My, you do have an odd definition of that word." As he spoke the long nail of his right hand slid across the palm of his left. Blood welled from the cut before he threw it into the air. Instead of falling back to Earth as expected, the blood expanded into summoning formula. Breaking through the lines of blood and chakra, a small butterfly-like creature darted into the area, trails of purple fog spewing from it's mouth. Rapidly the area began to fill with the mist as the baby-headed creature darted between the trees.

"This should get it out of it's den post haste. Oh, and," he smiled toward Hayate before licking his teeth, "I'd hold my breath if I were you."

Upon reaching the den Mayuri offered a solution to getting the creature out of the den, displaying his skill with Kuchiyose that Hayate had never seen. Even more interesting was the summoning process, being a novice user of Fuuinjutsu he was interested if there was some unknown benefit to the methods used. The summoned creature certainly wasn’t big, but it immediately began emitting a purple mist that didn’t look like it should be fucked with. Heeding Mayuri’s advice he held his breath in and waited, sure that the creature they hunted would emerge soon. It took less than a minute after the tiny winged insect blanketed the surrounding area with the poisonous cloud for sounds of the approaching mountain lion to become audible. There were a series of howls and scratching noises that bounced their way to the entrance of the cave where they stood, growing louder and less distorted with each sound.

A powerful paw extended out from the misted-over cave, quickly followed by the rest of the gigantic cat as it pounced out from its poisoned home. With streaming red eyes, it immediately engaged as soon as it had visual contact with the invaders of its home, unleashing a flurry of slashes with its front paws after jumping once more. Hayate aimed a slew of counter punches carefully, not wanting to say hello to the giant, razor-sharp claws fist first. After the series of deflections, he raised his right leg and stomped the ground with all his strength to throw the cat off its balance for just a moment where its paws weren’t blocking its head. Opening his mouth he unleashed a bolt of lightning at the opening, striking the lion in the jaw. Whining from the potent attack the lion retreated, now wounded and ready for the final blow. Half of its jaw was now a charred and melted affair, though it still had half a mouth of sharp teeth and its arsenal of claws.

The appearance of the mountain lion came with his summon's sudden ceasing of it's miasma. It still hung in the air for the moment, but the most potent part of it had already begun to waft away in the mountain breeze. Angered, and justly so, the beast attacked with little warning. Mayuri's face elongated in a frown as instinct took over any semblance of intelligence their prey once possessed. It was pathetic, watching it's attacks swatted away by Hayate's fists before a violent display of Ninjutsu ruined half of the lion's visage. Ashisogi Jizo moved through the air away from the captured feline and behind it's summoner. Another sound behind them caused the small creature to dart into the woods. A short laugh filled the air as Mayuri's smile returned. "I seem to have drawn the attention of more than this one." He said nonchalantly before a sudden boom sounded behind them, followed by a dying hiss of a beast and the yawning cracks of falling trees. "Oh dear, it tried to kill my summon. Oh well, there are more where it came from."

"Hayate, do me a favor would you?" He placed a hand on the man's shoulder before leaning in to whisper in his ear. "Let me see how much control you have." A battle against beasts was no true test of Hayate's growth with the Curse Seal but it was better than nothing. Without more interesting orders coming from the absent Raikage, there likely wouldn't be another chance to see his experiment in action. He removed his hand from Hayate, "That is, if you want of course. I would never make you do something you wouldn't feel comfortable with." Leaves began to rustle all around the pair, as eyes shone through the shadows. Mayuri's lips peeled back as he stared back into each set of eyes. Disgusting mongrels, they can't even tell the difference between genius and food.

With the one lion dwindled down it seemed like the rest of the pack was on the way, hardly a test for the two elite shinobi but as always Mayuri was able to seek out an opportunity amongst it all. Leaning in the man whispered to Hayate, requesting a display of his control over the power he so yearned to master. Likely it was to gather data on him fighting, which meant it would be all on his shoulders to take the pack out. This wasn’t even a thought when it came to a request from Mayuri, in fact, the prospect of testing his current progress was rather exciting. It was simply out of the question for Hayate to deny him of such, simply nodding along in agreement before letting loose the inkling of power he held over the potent seal. The red brush strokes fanned out over half his body, wrapping themselves up to his cheekbones and stretching as far they could down his arms and legs.

As his body prepared itself the pack gathered around the pair, some of them coughing violently having breathed in the poisonous mist. Not wanting to give the lions the opportunity to fully surround them Hayate kicked off and aimed to kick the one he’d wounded earlier in the head. With its senses dulled he was easily able to finish off the simple beast at his speed, its bones crushing under his boot. Spinning his body he flung the corpse at a few of the lions, this brought his legs above him and allowed for him to push off of the ground and flip back into the fray of fur, claws, and blood. Outmatching the creatures with his physical prowess Hayate made quick work of the pack, about half of their numbers remained after the initial assault. If one were to look between the survivors and the dead lions could confirm that those who had fallen were the older and wounded members of the pack. But Hayate's mind wasn't on the track at the moment, it was to tear, stomp and crush every one of the furry bastards in front of him.

Taking a step back, Mayuri kept an interested eye on Hayate. There were moments were he moved faster than the man's eye could track but that didn't stop Mayuri from knowing what his accomplice was doing. It was over far shorter than the scientist would have liked but it was an eye-opening display. Even with only a small portion of the seal's power, Hayate had managed to far exceed his expectations. Almost as soon as it started, Mayuri placed a hand on his raging comrade and tapped his nail against Hayate. "That was quite impressive, really. Though one of these days we're going to have to work on keeping that temper under control. The beasts were done after the first blows but you didn't seem to realize that. Not that you should concern yourself with that sort of thing. We shouldn't worry ourselves with those beneath us, don't you agree?"

Mayuri stepped away to deal with one of the closer corpses. Removing a small scalpel from his sleeve he began to skin the pelt from the beast. His cuts were clean and immaculate and in no time at all he had the proof of their, well Hayate's, hard work. Rolling the pelt up, he placed it inside his robe before standing. "I have high hopes for you after this display however. Your body cooperated with the seal much better than I had originally envisioned. That does not happen often so I shouldn't have to tell you how exciting it is!" He turned his back on Hayate then and began to walk the trail back toward the village proper. "You said you wanted to see the boy? Perhaps I'll let you. It's the least I could do." While he had inklings as to why Hayate was interested in Slyther, he couldn't be entirely sure. Whatever the purpose however, it was one that he would find use for. Between Hayate's growth and the taste of change in the air coming from Kirigakure and Konohagakure, things were shaping up to be interesting indeed.

Finishing off the remaining forces was a simple task, though by the end Hayate found himself pummeling the corpses into a red past. His handler brought him back to the present, luckily Mayuri was able to find a less obliterated corpse to bring back proof of the completed mission. “Yes, of course.” Having been so blinded by his rage and power flowing through him Hayate had quite easily lost himself in the battle, something that couldn’t be allowed to happen when fighting real shinobi. But still, the mark on his shoulder felt a tad lighter than normal after his killing spree, perhaps he had progressed another notch with the tool he was slowly learning to wield. While it still drew power from him on a constant basis he felt more in control here then he did when fighting the twins a couple of weeks ago, which meant he was definitely making progress.

Mayuri sang additional praise of his ability to handle the potent seal, the recognition bringing an unusual amount of gratification. Hayate was never one to seek out the approval of others, but that all changed once he’d met this strange and intoxicating individual. The attention of Mayuri was quickly becoming a higher and higher priority to him, so once it was mentioned that he would be allowed back into the lab to see the undying boy a bubble of happiness welled up inside him. Hayate was careful not to express this sense of joy on his face, as different as he may feel around this man he wasn’t too keen on displaying it all.

With the mission all set and done the two made their way back to the village, hoping that the first stop would be to the lab where the boy was supposed to be. Not sure if his desire would be met with good reception, though if anyone were to tolerate his desires it would certainly be Mayuri.
