Arid waved her hand, swatting away the thought of seeking her parents out. "There'd be no point. The note was hint enough: my parents either didn't want to be sought out, or they didn't want to leave, and I'd only be tracking down skeletons."
The woman crawled out of her tent, standing and dusting herself off. She put a hand on her hip underneath her long poncho, gesturing towards Ayane with the other. "Ty Lee, Kanbe, Nensho, Shingen, Kyousuke.... even you. You're my family, now." Arid explained, turning her view away from Ayane. "You're all I have, really."
With the tents set up, it was time to build a fire. Things were getting cold, and fast. Arid knelt in the clearing right outside their tents and reached into her pack, retrieving a small fold-able shovel -- about the length of her arm, unfolded. With a quick flick of her wrist, she unfolded the shovel and began to dig a small hole in the ground upwind, leading to a much bigger hole in the center. In this, she filled it with plenty of firewood, twigs, and dry leaves and grass. She turned and pointed to the smaller hole. "This is for ventilation. That way, the fire isn't swallowed up by all the smoke, and it leads about ten to twelve inches to the very bottom of this hole," she explained, pointing to the bigger hole. "That way, you get plenty of oxygen flowing under the flame, and it helps the fire get nice and hot."
"He sat a few seats down from what looked like a living poncho"
